#OnThisDay in 1965, nearly 600 voting rights marchers were brutally attacked on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. The violence of “Bloody Sunday,” seen across the nation, galvanized public support and helped lead to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

#OnThisDay in 1936, Marian Anderson became the first Black artist to perform at a White House state dinner. In 1939, she gave her historic Lincoln Memorial concert, and in 1955 became the first Black performer at the Metropolitan Opera.

During Black History Month, we honor the birthday and enduring legacy of Toni Morrison, a masterful storyteller whose work deepened our understanding of race, history, and identity through empathy and truth. Her voice remains an essential part of literary and cultural history.

We are saddened by the passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson. A fearless advocate for civil rights and economic justice, and a protégé of Dr. King, he uplifted marginalized voices and opened doors for generations. His legacy will continue to inspire.

During Black History Month, we recognize the birthday and lasting impact of Frederick Douglass, a truth-telling leader whose words and actions helped shape the ongoing pursuit of freedom and equality in America. His legacy remains an essential part of the history we reflect on.
