#OnThisDay in 1965, nearly 600 voting rights marchers were brutally attacked on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama.
The violence of “Bloody Sunday,” seen across the nation, galvanized public support and helped lead to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

#OnThisDay in 1936, Marian Anderson became the first Black artist to perform at a White House state dinner. In 1939, she gave her historic Lincoln Memorial concert, and in 1955 became the first Black performer at the Metropolitan Opera.
