Chicago Staff brings the crowd to its feet with Paul Lovatt-Cooper’s “Power and The Glory”. Returning to the antiphonal set from the beginning, the bright timbres are able to cut through the richness of the middle of the band. Really great playing. #ChicagoStaffBand

Chicago Staff: Another world premiere, this time by Sam Creamer from Australia. Sam writes jazz like an American native and the band executes well, featuring Isaac Leka on cornet in the solo section. Great playing by Isaac with his brother Sam laying down the groove. #CSB

Chicago Staff: next comes a samba setting by Kevin Larsson, “The Fruit of The Spirit”, featuring soloists on flugel, cornet, euphonium, tenor horn, Eb bass, and another soli from the impressive trombone section. Good sounds, good grooves 👌🏻 #ChicagoStaffBand

Chicago Staff: we are back after the interval with “Joy Dance”. Latin grooves all around, the band returns with high octane excitement ready for the second half. #ChicagoStaffBand

Chicago Staff closes the first half of the concert with “Comfort and Joy”, a rock setting of Christmas tunes showcasing each section with featured soli. Sam Leka lays it all down on the drum set with true class. The band leaves the crowd at the intermission with all standing.

“See Amid The Winter’s Snow”, originally a choral piece transcribed by the bandmaster, showcases the truly lush lyrical playing of this band, but the delicate mallet work of the percussion section adds an impressive sparkle. A very enjoyable setting. #ChicagoStaffBand

Chicago Staff has the pleasure of performing “The Message of Christmas” by its former Bandmaster William Himes, with Himes present in the appreciative audience.

CSB gives an enjoyable performance a difficult work, “The Present Age.” Wonderful solo work from flugel Lynda Cooper, excellent contrast between inner voices of horns and euph to the brightness of trombones and the dark bass sound. Scrappy at times but overall well done. #CSB

Chicago staff ends their opening set with Stephen Ponsford’s “Fan Into Flame”. High caliber playing of an exciting work. MVP award goes to BBb stalwart Scott Thomas for truly tasteful pedals. Getting ready to play the master work “The Present Age”. #ChicagoStaffBand

Chicago Staff premiers another brand new work from the conductor, this time a solo setting of “Jesus Paid It All” beautifully played by principal cornet Beth Malovance. Wonderful lyrical playing from the soloist, rich foundation from the basses in top form #ChicagoStaffBand

Next comes a prolific march by Wilfred Heaton, “Praise”. The trombones shine through on this classic, yet demanding march, bringing a great level of intonation and balance. While unsettled at times, the band brings a rousing performance of a difficult march. #ChicagoStaffBand

Chicago Staff continues with another Burgmayer work, “Prelude to A New Day”. The world is full of luscious chords and the band presents a good balance throughout. The work ends with an soft, unresolved chord, perhaps foreshadowing the coming of the “new day”… #ChicagoStaffBand

The premiere of “Anthem of the Ages” sees a powerful start, craftfully set with trombones and cornets surrounding then rear and side and basses in the middle. Strong showing from all registers, sop player soaring over the band comfortably #ChicagoStaffBand

The @ChiStaffBand concert has begun on a high note, with the band in antiphonal setup for the world premiere of Harold Burgmayer’s “Anthem of the Ages”. Burgmayer is at the helm.
