Aga Khan University’s Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Nation Media Group Uganda, strengthening collaboration between academia and the media industry. Through this partnership, we aim to bridge the gap between industry and academia, increase applied research, provide practical placement opportunities for students, and foster innovation in media viability and sustainability. The MoU was signed in the presence of Dean Nancy Booker, Associate Dean George Nyabuga, NMG Uganda Managing Director Susan Nsibirwa, and Managing Editor Allan Chekwech, who is also a GSMC alumnus. Reflecting on impact! GSMC and the Aga Khan Foundation met today to review the AGECS project, which successfully concluded in December 2025. Across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, the project strengthened media and civil societies to address gender inequality through mentorship, skills development, and leveraging research and advocacy. After more than 15 years in the newsroom, former NTV journalist Mark Masai discovered there was more to communications than he had imagined. Stepping into agency leadership revealed a deeper, more rigorous side of the field and a need to understand strategic communications as a discipline. That realisation led him to GSMC’s Master of Arts in Strategic Communications. “I joined GSMC out of need,” Mark says. “After my time at NTV and then at the agency, I saw a real opportunity to grow in Strategic Communications. Prof. Kun Tang, Assistant Dean, and Prof. Kaibo Wang, Vice Dean of the Vanke School of Public Health at Tsinghua University, visited Aga Khan University earlier today, where they met with Prof. Tania Bubela, Provost and Vice President Academic, Prof. Marleen Temmerman, Director of the Women Child Health Centre of Excellence, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Research and Extension, Prof. Lukoye Atwoli, Dean of the Medical College, Prof. Nancy Booker, Dean of the Graduate School of Media and Communications, and Prof. Zul Merali, Director of the Brain & Mind Institute, to discuss and further advance collaboration between Tsinghua University and Aga Khan University.

Earlier today at the African Women in Sports Summit in Kampala, Samantha Agasha, a student of Master of Arts in Strategic Communication at GSMC and co-author of our research on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in sports in East Africa, shared key findings on prevalence, impact, and interventions during the “Remembering Our Champions” session. The session honored athletes lost to gender-based violence, including Rebecca Cheptegei, Agnes Tirop, and Damaris Mutua, and highlighted the School’s leadership in advancing the safety and rights of women in sports. Other panelists included Ugandan marathoner Immaculate Chemutai and Doreen Okiri, Chair of the Strategy Committee & Gender Representative, NOC Kenya. The session was moderated by Sayson Rossette Meya, Chair of the Gender, Equity and Diversity Commission, Uganda Olympic Committee.

For 21 years, the AIJC has been anchored in South Africa, and this marks a monumental milestone, signalling East Africa’s rising dominance in the investigative journalism sphere and cementing GSMC’s status as a leader in journalism and media education and training.
