Hot take: Ash's Kanto ace is not Charizard. It is Kingler. Despite never being trained outside of official battlefield experience, Kingler is capable of using 8 moves at a time - from Crabhammer to Hyper Beam - and has an outstanding win record. Even as a Krabby, it was extremely potent and overcame an abysmal matchup versus Exeggutor. I'm not saying Charizard is weak, but objectively speaking, Charizard threw the whole Indigo League for Ash, and Kingler carried him as far as he got. Charizard's major feats come after Kanto, making Kingler the true Kanto ace. The only time Kingler didn't work was because Ash was dumb and commanded it to use Vicegrip on Misty's Psyduck's head. Genius Ash moment. Ash tried to take Kingler to the Johto League, but a bunch of Voltorb exploded on it outside of battle and it got stuck in the Pokemon Center as a result. It would have been too overpowered. For all we know, if Ash brought Kingler to that League, he could have won the Silver Conference instead of Jon Dickson. Kingler hard counters Jon Dickson's Rhyhorn and Rapidash, as well as Harrison's Blaziken - the main Pokemon he would've had to beat to win the league. So, yeah.
