The day has finally come for Nanoco's 3 Peaks Challenge to commence! Our tenacious team of hikers set-off at 8am this morning to Fort William where they will be spending the night before taking on the infamous Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon summits. As of today, we have managed to raise over £1,265 for Emmaus Merseyside, who are our proud charity partnership for this next year. Our original goal was to raise £1,000 but we are happy to say we have managed to smash that target and are still taking any further donations over the weekend. The 10th of September is globally recognised as World Suicide Prevention Day every year and this year's theme was 'Changing the Narrative on suicide', to raise awareness about the importance of reducing the stigma of suicide and encouraging open conversations to prevent them. We believe every day should be suicide prevention day and want to keep the conversation going beyond the 10th of September. With statistics from Samaritans showing that 1 in 5 of us will struggle with suicidal thoughts in our lifetime, we need to TALK more openly about the subject to our friends, families or colleagues. Whether that is checking in to see how they are, or speaking up about how you are feeling. The same study showed that while 74% of people are comfortable talking with family and friends about mental health and wellbeing, only 45% are comfortable talking about suicidal thoughts. Did you know that Nanoco has over 350 granted and pending patents to protect our many innovations around quantum dots? Our core technology CFQD® quantum dots, consists of fluorescent semiconductor nanoparticles typically between 10 to 100 atoms in diameter, which is about 1/1000th the width of a human hair. Depending on the size of these particles, the CFQD® quantum dots can be tuned to emit certain colours that can be used in a variety of different media, with further form factors and applications being achieved by adjusting their surface ligands. Our HEATWAVE® quantum dots are specially designed for use in the sensor industry to extend the range of current CMOS Image Sensors out into the near-infrared (NIR) and short-wave infra-red (SWIR) range of wavelengths. Their use enables the sensors to maintain small pixel sizes compared to other expensive technologies allowing for higher resolution camera devices at a much cheaper cost. At Nanoco we are dedicated to the wellbeing and support of our colleagues in many different ways. With our 3 peaks hike only a couple months away, our team have gotten stuck-in with their training by hiking up Snowdon in what can only be called as dreary weather... On top of that, other members of the team have started getting together to play in our newly formed Badminton club which over 21% of our staff have joined so far! Congrats Nathalie! Earlier this week, one of our dedicated employees celebrated 15 years at Nanoco Technologies! Nathalie, our IP & Grants Manager started her journey with us in 2009 after graduating from university with a degree in Chemistry. She was interested in a role within the North West, that concentrated on materials science with technology that had the potential to have real-world applications in the future. Since then she has worked as a chemist in the synthesis of PV materials before moving into a role that focused on protecting our technology, as well as being our intellectual property specialist. More recently she's started working on commercial contracts and managing grant projects for the company in-line with her current role.
