Across the first three general elections of independent India—1951–52, 1957, and 1962—the Indian National Congress under Jawaharlal Nehru secured an overwhelming mandate, winning 364/489, 371/494, and 361/494 seats respectively—nearly 70% dominance each time. In a newly independent nation with weak opposition and immense public trust, such power could have easily led to centralized, unchecked rule, as seen in other parts of the world. But instead of consolidating authority, Nehru chose to strengthen democratic institutions, uphold free elections, and allow dissent to exist.
