Oh, an in an ironic twist, Wheeler's crusade against the abuse of the Bureau of Investigation's powers resulted in the rise of a young J. Edgar Hoover. He would serve as director of the Bureau (later rechristened "FBI") for nearly 48 years.

Wheeler's investigation ultimately forced Harry Daugherty's resignation and shocked the nation into caring whether the Department of Justice was true to its name. The former AG was tried twice for conspiracy to defraud the US, but both trials resulted in hung juries.

The story soon took a dramatic turn, for Harry Daugherty had no problem "weaponizing" the DOJ against his political enemies. Just as Sen. Wheeler closed in on the truth, he found himself indicted on trumped-up federal charges.

Meanwhile, banker Mal Daugherty defied a Senate subpoena for his brother's banking records. The Senate had its sergeant-at-arms arrest Mal, who challenged his detention in federal court. Ultimately, SCOTUS ruled for the Senate, confirming Congress' power to compel testimony.
