AI is different than anything that came before because AI's sole purpose is to mimic - and functionally replace - everything humans can do. AI was trained (without consent or compensation) on the entirety of human knowledge & skill. If AI succeeds in utilizing that data the way Big Tech hopes, then humans become obsolete for all "known" information and skill. The tech industry knows all of these obvious "problems", but of course, they don't care, because the only ones who win in a system like that are those who own the AI itself - and that's THEM. Owning the means of production and access to the entirety of human information (because AI will eventually suffocate the internet as we know it to death, so all that will be left for the public's adopted need of instant gratification information will be AI chatbots) will give them unimaginable power. And that's what those ghouls want: technocratic power and rule. They don't hide this goal, either; if you listen to them talk when they're musing in rooms full of their peers, they say it plainly. Palantir's recent manifesto was an insane read but it really is the actual blueprint that they (and all of tech) are working toward. So Big Tech is destroying the foundation of our work economy because that's where all their benefits will come from. Once the job collapse has people desperate, THEN they'll swoop in with solutions to "support" the public - and through that, put the whole world in their debt. That's what they want. That's what those comically evil broligarchs are salivating over. It's why they're bull rushing adoption and ham fisting AI down our throats with such a fevered desperation. They know they're close and can move much faster than the sloth-like courts and governments that may try to stop them. Thankfully, the public is resisting AI more than they expected - but even still, AI has fully captured our society's capitalistic leaders, and through them, AI is causing plenty of damage nonetheless, despite the will of the public. And unlike previous technologies like factories or ATMs or the internet, that damage will be permanent - meaning, jobs will be lost and not replaced by something new - so long as AI is seen as a viable solution or product. Because from the ground up, AI was not designed to coexist with human labor - it's owners WANT it to replace us.

I’m an AI critic who is also a staff software engineer. I am extremely familiar with what AI can and can’t be useful for. It’s best use cases are not as a consumer LLM product for writing prose or generating images and video, which is the main way it is being sold to the public. The downstream negative effects of data centers, as well as the obvious issues with giving anyone the ability to create realistic deepfakes of living people doing anything you want them to do are enough to demand that AI be highly regulated. It is like arguing that every person have access to an atom bomb. It’s best utility is on closed datasets not essay writing and insert yourself into your favorite marvel movie.

The thing is there's not really a way to fix this because it's a community problem. WoW has fostered an incredibly toxic community and Tanking has the most responsibility and thus the most avenue for error and blame. I was trying to teach a friend to tank and it sucked.
