I envy the Israeli left. Not their politics. Their freedom. They march through Tel Aviv calling their own country an apartheid state. They go on CNN and call the IDF war criminals. They write op-eds in Haaretz comparing Israel to the worst regimes in history. They join NGOs funded by hostile governments to produce reports designed to delegitimize the Jewish state. And then they go home. Sleep in their beds. Send their kids to school the next morning. No one threatens their family. No one disappears them in the night. No one drags them from their home. Zero consequences. Now imagine, just imagine, if Iranians had 1% of that freedom. If an Egyptian columnist could criticize Sisi the way Gideon Levy criticizes Netanyahu. If a Palestinian in Ramallah could call Abbas corrupt on live TV and walk home safely. If someone in Gaza could have held a sign saying "Hamas does not speak for me" without being executed. The Middle East would be unrecognizable. The great irony is that the people who enjoy more political freedom than virtually anyone else in the region use that freedom to paint Israel as a tyranny while the actual tyrannies they're silent about would imprison or kill them for doing the same. You're not brave. You're spoiled. You mistake comfort for conscience. You scream "genocide" into a microphone the state itself protects, then sleep soundly in a democracy you spend your days trying to destroy, while millions across this region would trade everything they have for five minutes of the freedom you use to spit on your own country.

The guy who helped build React, the most popular workaround for the browser's layout engine, just said the workaround isn't sufficient and built the replacement himself. Cheng Lou's resume is the context that makes this announcement hit different. He worked on React at Facebook. Created ReasonML and ReScript. Built Messenger's frontend. Now runs Midjourney's entire UI stack on Bun. Every single role was a fight against the same enemy: the browser's rendering pipeline. Here's why this matters beyond the engineering flex. The web was built to render documents. Static HTML, flowing text, pages you scroll through. CSS layout was designed for that world. Then we started building applications inside the document renderer: spreadsheets, design tools, messaging apps, AI chat interfaces. Every one of those applications has to ask the browser permission to know how big text is. That question triggers reflow. Reflow locks the main thread. At 60fps you get 16 milliseconds per frame. Spend those milliseconds on layout recalculation and the user sees jank. The industry's answer for the last decade has been to work around the problem. Virtual DOM (React) batches the writes. CSS containment limits the blast radius. content-visibility skips offscreen layout. FastDOM separates reads from writes. Every solution accepts that the browser owns text measurement and tries to call it less often. Cheng Lou's answer: stop calling it at all. Measure text in pure TypeScript. Skip the DOM. Skip CSS. Skip reflow entirely. Zero layout passes. The performance improvement, per his demo, is categorical. 0.05ms versus 30ms. Zero reflows versus five hundred. The person who understands the browser rendering pipeline better than almost anyone alive just built the tool that makes part of it unnecessary. That tells you where application-grade UI is heading.

אני אנצל את הציוץ (הבאמת מצחיק) הזה של יששכר כדי לדבר על טעות נפוצה בהבנה של רבים לגבי איך עובד מנוע הסילון ולמה פרופלורים זה אחלה ולא מעיד על מטוס מיושן או בעייתי. אז איך עובד מנוע סילון? כשהמטוס טס קדימה אוויר מלפנים נכנס פנימה למנוע, שם דוחסים אותו לתא קטן בצפיפות אדירה, מזריקים פנימה דלק ומציתים. האוויר הצפוף מתחמם לטמפרטורה של מעל אלף מעלות ומתפשט אחורה כזרם סילון שדוחף את המטוס קדימה. מה הבעיה בתיאור הזה? שהוא לא נכון. כלומר כל זה באמת קורה, אבל הסילון הזה הוא לא מה שדוחף מטוס נוסעים קדימה. למה? כי זו דרך מאוד לא יעילה לבזבז דלק. כל ליטר של דלק שאני שורף משמש להאצה של מעט מאוד אוויר. יותר יעיל לקחת המון אוויר ולהאיץ אותו ממש טיפה (מי שרוצה הסבר פיזיקלי מעמיק שיבקש בתגובות). איך עושים את זה? פרופלור! הוא דוחף מלא אוויר. לכן מה שבפועל קורה במנוע ענק של מטוס נוסעים זה שהסילון שיוצא לא משמש לדחיפת המטוס, אלא לסיבוב של פרופלור ענק (ליתר דיוק מניפה, אבל אני לא הולך להתעכב על ההבדל), והוא זה שדוחף את המטוס. במנוע מודרני של מטוס נוסעים יותר מ-90% מהאוויר שנכנס בכלל לא עובר דחיסה והצתה עם הדלק, הוא פשוט עובר דרך הפרופלור ונדחף אחורה. במטוס בתמונה של יששכר הפרופלור גלוי בלי חיפוי. במטוסים שטסים מהר יותר יש חיפוי עגול שמסתיר את הפרופלור, שנחוץ כדי לווסת את זרימת האוויר ולהפחית רעש. אבל זה לא בטוח יישאר כך בעתיד. היום הדור החדש ביותר של מנועים שמפותח הוא כזה בלי חיפוי בכלל (שיוצר גרר ומשקל לא רצוי). במקומו יש להבים מתקדמים בפרופלור שמווסתים את האוויר והרעש בלי צורך בחיפוי. אם הפיתוח יצליח, בעתיד בכל מטוסי הנוסעים נוכל לראות את הפרופלור גלוי. אנקדוטה לסיום: איפה בכל זאת מה שדוחף את המטוס הוא בעיקר הסילון ולא פרופלור? במטוסי קרב ומכמה סיבות. ראשית, אין שם מקום לפרופלור גדול. שנית, דחף על ידי סילון אמנם בזבזני בדלק אבל מאפשר האצה מהירה יותר שזה קריטי למטוסים בקרב. שלישית, יש בעיות אחרות עם פרופלורים ברגע שמגיעים למהירות על קולית. מסקנה: אין מה לפחד ממטוס עם פרופלור גלוי. זה גם מנוע סילון, פשוט כזה שמיועד למהירות נמוכה יותר מאלו שיש להם כיסוי.
