You think Trump will be tough on China? You are in for a surprise. Trump’s foreign policy now seems clear: A🧵 1. Trump seeks a Grand Bargain with China-Russia dividing the globe into spheres of influence, to be agreed/announced in steps over 4 years (+ secret protocols) 1/12

It was clear even from DJ’s first term that far from ushering in a “golden era” he would be the face of American decline. He even campaigned on it, so it’s not controversial

Gift article from the author, who explains that the US's Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, has a grudge against the army for undervaluing his "talents" in the past, and has has "busied himself with culture war nonsense rather than substantive defense and security issues."
Tom Nichols@RadioFreeTom

Someone needs to tell the American people what's going on in the Pentagon, and it obviously won't be Pete Hegseth, who is at war with America's senior military officers. My latest: theatlantic.com/politics/2026/…

theguardian.com/world/2026/apr… Starmer says Iran has refocused the govt on “ambitious” new ties with Europe, economically and in defence But vague on economic links And the best way to get Europe's attention on defence would be by hiking UK spending by £30b+ over the next 2/3 years

This particular writing has been on the wall for a while. But it is still a signal to the UK government that pushing serious increases in defence spending into the 2030s is living in cloud cuckoo land (h/t Aristophanes)

So the US under DJT needs some help from its allies now? The way I understood US rhetoric the last year, those allies are: El Salvador, Venezuela (I think?), Argentina (I think?), Hungary and FIFA. 3D chess.
