My youngest daughter is 28 years old. One of her high school friends has been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. She also has tumors in her spine and can no longer walk. 28 years old. So today is my birthday. It also happens to be my wedding anniversary. Yeah, I know. It was the only day we could get the chapel. Cory always said he was the best birthday present I ever got. He was right. We would have been married for 38 years and I’m grateful for every moment. Today I’m focusing on all the happy memories and being grateful to be alive. Happy Anniversary baby! Today I took the first step towards reclaiming myself after the trauma of the last year. I got up off the couch and went for a walk. That may not sound like a big deal, but I’ve been a slug since my husband passed, and I haven’t really worked out since last summer, due to caring for him. So here’s to first steps, literally.

This was my husband’s 60th birthday. His buddies had shirts with his face on them made for everyone. The back says “Don’t tell me what to do”, and yes, he would say that jokingly to me all the time. He was always the light in the room, the life of the party.
