The Ministry of Health is today holding a high-level consultative meeting with the Council of Governors to provide an update on the implementation of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), with a focus on the rollout of the Social Health Authority (SHA). The meeting will also review the progress of key joint initiatives between the Ministry and the Council, including the Microwave Waste Management Project and the national scale-up of the Assistive Technology Programme, among others. Additionally, the forum will deliberate on strategies to strengthen postgraduate training for doctors, address gaps in medical specialisations, and enhance capacity for specialized healthcare across the country. This is a follow up to the meeting held on 14th April 2025 and is aimed at forging strong collaboration towards UHC.

The Ministry of Health, this morning, held a strategic meeting with the Clinical Officers Council (COC) to review and align its mandate with the ongoing implementation of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Kenya. Established under the Clinical Officers Council (Training, Registration & Licensing) Act, No. 20 of 2017, the Council is mandated to regulate the training, registration, licensing, and practice of clinical officers across the country. During the meeting, key emphasis was placed on upholding integrity and transparency in the Council’s operations, in line with global best practices. This is part of the broader effort to strengthen governance and ensure that clinical officers contribute effectively to delivering the highest attainable standards of health for all Kenyans. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working collaboratively with regulatory bodies such as the COC to enhance service delivery and ensure a competent, ethical, and well-distributed health workforce as a cornerstone of UHC.

The Ministry of Health has today signed a Performance Contract with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC), reaffirming its commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery. The Council plays a critical role in safeguarding public health and upholding professional standards through the regulation of training, registration, licensing, and oversight of medical, dental, oral health practitioners, and other health professionals. Recent milestones, including ISO certification and the revision of the Code of Conduct and Ethics, reflect KMPDC’s proactive approach to addressing emerging challenges in the health sector. The Ministry remains committed to supporting the Council in effectively executing its mandate in line with national health goals.

We held a strategic meeting with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to discuss cross-border and regional efforts aimed at strengthening health emergency preparedness and response for Mpox. The discussions centered on advancing a multi-sectoral One Health approach to pandemic preparedness and response, emphasizing the importance of coordinated action across human, animal, and environmental health sectors. The IGAD delegation was led by Mr. Mubarak Mabuyu, Director for Health and Social Development, and Dr. Fatuma Adan, IGAD Head of Mission to Kenya.

Today, we convened a consultative meeting with a delegation from the World Bank, representatives from the Council of Governors (COG), and the Treasury to review the progress of the Building Resilient and Responsive Health Systems project. This important collaboration, led by the Ministry of Health in partnership with the World Bank, is focused on enhancing primary healthcare across all counties. Special emphasis is placed on improving Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) services, especially in regions with the greatest need. Together, we remain steadfast in our commitment to reducing healthcare disparities, ensuring that every Kenyan, no matter where they live, has access to quality healthcare services.

Continued use of Lang’ata Cemetery, despite being declared full nearly two decades ago, poses serious public health concerns, including overcrowding, shallow graves, and exposure of human remains due to interference by wild animals. The Ministry of Health, through the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, today presented an assessment report before the Parliamentary Committee on Implementation. The report, delivered by Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, detailed the associated risks and recommended urgent mitigation measures. Collaboration with the Nairobi City County Government and other stakeholders is ongoing to identify suitable alternative burial land and ensure the dignity of the deceased is upheld. Safeguarding public health remains a central priority.

The Ministry of Health will be conducting training on drug and substance abuse control in Kirinyaga County. The training targets local leaders and Community Health Promoters. We will focus on strengthening the community’s response to substance abuse, with a special emphasis on novel nicotine and tobacco products. This training is an opportunity to equip our communities with the knowledge and tools needed to prevent substance abuse and promote healthier lifestyles. We will also inform on the Social Health Authority and the available benefits for those with mental health issues and those recovering from drug and subtancs abuse.
