An under-discussed topic in venture is the relationship between a founder and their lead partner. It’s easy to focus on the firm, the brand, the check size, or the terms. But once the money is in, what often moves the needle most is the day-to-day relationship with the partner who led the deal. A strong one can quietly change outcomes. They can help get the rest of the board aligned when it matters. They can be a sounding board on hard strategic calls. And sometimes they’re just the person you can talk to when things are falling apart. I’ve seen this relationship become a real unlock for founders. I’ve also seen it become a drag. And in a few cases, it’s turned into a genuine, lifelong friendship that has nothing to do with the investment anymore. The specific partner you’re going to work with for the next 5–10 years matters a ton. The firm matters but founders should probably spend just as much (if not more) evaluating the human they’ll actually be in the trenches with.
