For the past few evenings, I've detached myself from my own reality and entered the world created by @neevkm in The Amendments (@picadorbooks, 2024). Such a fascinating narrative about women across generations in Ireland and then in London, but in fact, such a powerful story of class and expectations and people who want to burst out of their skin and become other people, cultural chameleons, if you will. When you discover Dolores, you will know what I mean. Can't believe that this is a first novel.

Irish people! Would you like a show that'll make you happy? The RTÉ player has all of Bachelor's Walk, that great show about flatmates in Dublin. The series started in 2001 and it's a super snapshot of the city at the time. I love it to death.

Another editorial job in publishing has gone to a private-school-and-Oxbridge-educated person. Good luck to them, genuinely. But at least one working-class person applied for that job, and I wonder how many did? Publishing, diversity is only diversity if it actually happens.

I am concerned about the Incitement to Violence or Hatred and Hate Offences Bill. It is very easy to imagine a future in which it is weaponized against the very minorities it seeks to protect. If you have not read it - it is here: data.oireachtas.ie/ie/oireachtas/…
