On This Day 22nd March 2015 This was the day a lost medieval king finally came home.
On this day in 2015, the oak coffin of King Richard III, the last Plantagenet king of England and the last English monarch to die in battle, began its final ceremonial journey through Leicestershire.
The coffin left the University of Leicester, where Richard’s remains had been studied since their discovery, and travelled first to Fenn Lane Farm (the nearest point to where he fell at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485). It then passed through the villages of Dadlington, Sutton Cheney, the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre on Ambion Hill, and Market Bosworth, deliberately retracing part of the king’s last journey 530 years earlier.
Upon returning to Leicester, the coffin was transferred from a motor hearse to a four-horse-drawn carriage for a stately procession through the city streets to Leicester Cathedral. There, a service of Compline was held, and Richard’s remains lay in state until his reinterment on 26th March.
More than 5,000 hand-made white roses lined the entire route, placed by local students and supporters in partnership with the Missing People charity. The symbolic installation (which aimed for exactly 5,929 roses, matching Leicestershire’s missing-persons reports from 2012–13) drew attention to modern-day missing people while crowds of up to 35,000 lined the roads, many throwing additional white York roses in tribute.
After Richard was killed at Bosworth on 22nd August 1485, his body was stripped, paraded naked through Leicester on the back of a horse, mocked by the victorious Tudor forces, and hastily buried without ceremony or marker in the Franciscan Greyfriars church. The friary was demolished during Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s, and the grave’s exact location was lost for more than 500 years (local legend even claimed the bones had been thrown into the River Soar). In August 2012, the “Looking for Richard” project, initiated by historian Philippa Langley and the Richard III Society, in partnership with the University of Leicester and Leicester City Council, excavated a council car park on the site of the lost Greyfriars church. The king’s skeleton (complete with battle wounds and severe scoliosis) was found on the very first day of digging. DNA testing (matching living maternal-line descendants), skeletal analysis, radiocarbon dating, and historical records dramatically confirmed the identity in February 2013.
The 2015 procession and reburial were organised to give Richard the public honour, dignity and royal farewell that had been so conspicuously denied in 1485. The route was chosen to let the public pay their respects and symbolically complete his unfinished story, from the battlefield where he died, back to the city where he had once ruled.
