I’m happy w/ maybe 10% of my landings.
The other 90% aren’t bad, they could just be better. I went a little further down the runway than ideal, was a little off centerline, touched down a bit firmer than I’d like. None of these things are dangerous, but they aren’t perfect.
It’s both a science & an art. How soon do you cut the power to idle, where do you raise the nose ever so slightly to cut the descent rate, how much rudder do you kick at the last second to align the nose w/ centerline in a crosswind. Where was your aim-point & when did you shift it to the horizon? How far did you touch down? Did you go really far down the runway trying to grease it on?
Smooth is great when it works, but it’s pretty far down my list when it comes to judging the landing. On a short or contaminated (wet, snowy, icy, etc.) runway, smooth is a complete accident & can be counterproductive…I’m not thinking about smooth at all, I want the wheels down forcefully to break through the contamination or to ensure I’m not floating above runway that’s being wasted. Get the wheels down & let the brakes do their work.
It’s fun to try for smooth sometimes on long runways, but I tend to use those opportunities to practice my short field technique. Don’t want to got to Maui or Lihue in gusty winds & have not done short field in a while. So, at about 200’ I’ll change the aimpoint (if you do it much higher, you get off the Glideslope & the jet starts announcing that), see a third red PAPI & cross the runway threshold at 50’ or lower.
Anyway, 90% of my landings leave something for me to learn from & do better next time. I’ve found that to be helpful in other areas of life, too.

Hell yeah!
Been looking for a series to watch w/ my son at night (daughter has no interest, sadly). This came up on Apple TV on the Top Chart as #1.
Watched it while deployed to the CAOC as EXXON. It was on the “Morale Drive”, where a bunch of free movies & TV shows could be accessed. I’m not sure of the legality there…it was a little dubious, but this was accessible to anyone on the deployed base. It didn’t exist at our home bases, probably for a reason.
A little mouse would visit me at my plywood desk on the “Dark Side”, before the new CAOC. I gave it some crumbs & it would go on its way. I’d get most of my work done & optimize the tanker schedule in the first 45 minutes of an 8-12 hour shift, 7 days a week. Then I just played “whack a mole” w/ problems that sprang up & asked the Australian controllers at the other end of my chat room what things like calling someone a “Muppet” meant.
(means you have to stick your hand up their ass & move their mouth yourself to make them say anything intelligent)
Anyway, I’d load a fat dip & settle in for some Galactica. The big British boss would come by sometimes & catch me.
I was always respectful & rose. I did my job really well & knew my stuff. When things went wrong, they looked at me & asked if we had gas to support responses. My answer was always that they had unlimited gas plus a reserve. Tankers will show up, come hell or high water. Yep, I’ve got gas for your F-15s to go supersonic & chase down a drone that has gone rogue & is heading for Pakistan…that KC-10 crew is already en-route at .88 Mach, your Eagles will have to catch up…they’ll be waiting near the border.
So, when the big boss came around, me watching the show wasn’t something he was going to make a fuss about.
Anyway, I didn’t watch much TV at home at that time, but this show was great. We start tonight!

Chip Ganassi Racing and the whole racing community has lost more than a legend — the world has lost one of its most extraordinary human beings.
Alex Zanardi was the definition of resilience, courage, and grace. He was integral in shaping Chip Ganassi Racing into what it has become. From the highest levels of motorsport to his incredible achievements beyond it, he showed us all what it truly means to fight, to adapt, and to live with purpose. His strength inspired millions, but it was his humility, kindness, and unwavering positivity that made him unforgettable.
He didn’t just overcome adversity — he redefined what was possible.
Rest in peace, Alex. Your legacy will continue to push us forward, on and off the track.

Should Gabriel have gotten a red card for his headbutt on Haaland? 👀🟥

This is not uncommon, nor is it necessarily unsafe. There is almost always someone landing in front of you, or taking off, or crossing the runway.
It’s not usually an issue. I’ve been close to having to go around because the jet landing in front of me hasn’t cleared the runway yet, but it usually works out; when cleared to line up on the runway or takeoff, you move with purpose. It’s not a leisurely stroll.
Now, we *could* reduce the allowed capacity at airports, but it comes with a cost. At some big airports, they have an arrival capacity of say 80 arrivals an hour (DCA, in the video, has an established rate of 36 per hour; nearby IAD a rate of 96). So let’s reduce it 10%, to 72 an hour. 8 per hour during peak times are no longer allowed in.
Overnight is not usually busy, and there are periods during the day that are much less busy, too, so maybe 8 per hour for 12 hours is 96 flights per day that are no longer allowed, just at that one airport. If we say an average of 140 passengers on each, that’s 13,440 passengers who have to be told no, you can’t travel today. Per day, at one airport…and that’s just arrivals, not including departures.
That’s a big number. Maybe you could shift those numbers into the overnight hours to create a steady arrival rate, with arrivals at 03:00, for example, but most people don’t want to do that.
We have examples of how this works…when weather rolls into airports, they reduce the arrival rates & start “Ground Delay Programs” (GDPs). As you know, it is a mess, with delays & cancelations piling up.
All of which is to say that if we want to reduce the “squeeze plays” by restricting the arrival & departure rates, it’s possible…but it comes at a cost, and it probably wouldn’t have prevented the helicopter collision. Those routes should not have been so close to the arrival corridors.
Everything has a cost.

“A squeeze play is when everything is dependent on an aircraft rolling, an aircraft slowing, and you know it's gonna be a very close operation,” says former Reagan National air traffic controller Emily Hanoka. cbsn.ws/4sAq1qN
