There is a complicated and boring reason this abbreviation is sometimes used. It's definitely not the university-preferred version. Ranked: NC State>NCSU>NCST>the old @AP favored No. Caro. St. The first one is the only one that should be used referring to (officially) North Carolina State University at Raleigh.
