Today is both Nakba Day and the anniversary of Okinawa’s reversion from U.S. rule to Japan. In Palestine, Zionists dispossessed Palestinians of their land, homes, and property, and killed many people in the process of establishing Israel. That violence continues to this day. Okinawa — once the Ryukyu Kingdom — was invaded and annexed by the Japanese Empire, and after WWII remained under U.S. administration for 27 years. Living under the violence and pressure of the U.S. military presence, some Okinawans hoped to be protected by the Japanese Constitution and fought for reversion to Japan. However, even after reversion, adequate compensation and equal protection under the same laws as mainland Japan have never truly been realized — for example, regarding the disproportionate burden of U.S. military bases concentrated in Okinawa. Structural discrimination rooted in racism has imposed exploitation and violence on both of these lands and their people. And it is deeply painful to realize that, simply by existing within these systems, I am also implicated in allowing such realities to continue. We need to put an end to this. Imo one of the reasons the chinese communists succeeded was recognizing the backwardness of the rural peasantry and working from that premise. Not out of patronizing chauvinism but a sincere desire to improve their lives.
