Voters rated inflation as the #1 issue, and the $1.9T American Rescue Plan may have lost Dems the White House. Inflation was already set to spike modestly as the pandemic economy reopens, and economists on the left & right warned Biden that adding $1.9 trillion to a supply-constained economy would pour gasoline on the inflationary fire. Democrats ignored their own economists - they won the election and it was their turn to hand out benefits and make up for the "too small" Obama stimulus. Well, without ARP, inflation likely peaks at 6% instead of 9%, the voter backlash is muted, and Harris may win. This is a case for caution in trying to buy votes with massive spending bills. Voters absolutely despise inflation (see also Carter, Jimmy). And, amazingly, Trump is set to repeat Biden's mistake by ignoring broad economist warnings and going big on inflationary tariffs right off the bat.

How easy has it been for him to get away with what he did by simply becoming right wing lol. Should raise concerns. The guy was the most left wing atheist hippie on planet earth until a sexual assault allegation came out

My big-picture explanation for Trump’s crushing victory is this: This wasn’t the 1st post-pandemic election. It was the 2nd COVID presidential election. You can’t explain Trump’s across-the-board romp without seeing the ways—obvious and subtle—that the pandemic haunted 2024

One thing I realized from listening to a bunch of interviews with the undecided voters is they really have no idea what is going on. They don't know about DEI or facism. They don't know what any of the policies are. They didn't like that groceries were expensive. That was it.

Everybody keep your heads up. This isn’t forever, and after America gets a taste of what it voted for, there will likely be a massive backlash. There will be lots of time to come, and I’m still in the trenches with you. Just going to take a bit longer.

Eight years ago this night, my son asked me: "What do we do now?" I answered, "We walk to the bar, strike up the band, and sing The Marseillaise." These past few months, my plan for 2025 was to retire from political journalism. Seems I'll have to make new plans.

I get the urge to be angry, but it's probably worth noting that Biden literally walked a picket line and bent over backwards to rescue pensions for unions like Teamsters. It did not help their electoral fortunes at all. The party is likely to move *right* after this, not left

Scathing statement from Bernie Sanders on the election results “It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them…”

I will forever remain deeply ashamed of having supported the winning presidential candidate in 2016. But I shall always be extremely proud of having supported the losing candidate in 2024.

We won't mince words. The reelection of Donald Trump is a disaster for the Boundary Waters. This is not hyperbole. This is not a case of Trump-Derangement Syndrome. This is based on Trump’s campaign promises and attacks he has already made on the Boundary Waters.🧵 📸 Alli Faricy

It's not just that Trump won. It's that Joe Rogan, Dana White and Brett Favre won. Jailed insurrectionists won. The Alitos and the Thomases won. Vladimir Putin won. Racism won. Misogyny won. Sexism won. Global warming won. Xenophobia won. Most of all: Fear Won. That's what hurts.
