Matt Fitzpatrick is just 31 years old, but having won a major and been a pro since 2014, he is mature beyond his years. The way he handled a difficult defeat on Sunday at The Players Championship with the crowd heckling him down the final stretch showed just that. Ahead of the Valspar Championship he was asked if it was something that was instilled in him at a young age and he gave a great answer, almost deflecting the praise onto Cameron Young: “My parents have raised me to be polite and, you know, and kind. Yeah, it all comes from my parents. The biggest example would be, I won the U.S. Open, my dad ran past me and went to shake hands with Will Zalatoris, you know, to say, obviously, commiserations. I know Will has mentioned that before to me. “So, yeah, it comes from my parents, they raised me to be that way. I think -- I know a lot of people say, Oh, Cam didn't really show any emotion as well. I'm sure he probably understood the situation. Obviously I'm right there, it's not like you give a big fist pump and cheer. That to me was a huge sign of respect too. You know, not to be fist pumping in my face or anything like that. So that's another reason why I've got a lot of respect for Cam for not just his play, but just as a person as well. And sharing, you know, two seasons in TGL now we got to know each other a little better. ⚫️⚪️ Some honest thoughts on #NUFC's summer... The last three months have been draining, chaotic and have ultimately ended in disappointing fashion, leaving fans frustrated, Eales/Mitchell under pressure and a feeling that Howe hasn't been backed, even if PSR/FFP limited some our spending once again. The Ashworth saga dragged on, the end of June was a total mess - forcing us to sell two of your best young talents before the 'PSR deadline' - Staveley's exit felt sad and destabilising and Mitchell's appointment was pretty late in the window considering it meant a totally new dynamic for Howe and a potential reset of transfer plans. Not signing Tosin Adarabioyo felt like an early blow that scrambled our plans - I imagine a top right-winger would have signed had we secured our RCB on the cheap - yet we had plenty of time to change our plans and ultimately failed to sign two of our top priorities (CB and RW) in the three months that followed. I understand the need to avoid panic buys, to sign the "right players" and avoid wasting money on deals that don't make sense or could backfire in time, but we've known all year that we needed a RCB and RW. It also feels like we allowed ourselves to get into this desperate deadline day position by spending too long on Guehi; who was never worth £70m despite ticking so many boxes. On top of that, we appear to have been poor sellers again. I have some sympathy, as it's not easy moving on deadwood who are on big money, often injured and/or have gone stale (Hayden, Targett, Fraser, Lewis), but this summer felt like the right time to sell the likes of Wilson, Almiron and perhaps even Trippier based on their age, contract situation and the fact it may have been our last window to get a half decent fee. We don't know the truth behind each case, but I am surprised to see the lack of 'player trading' that Eales talked up a few months ago to help us work within the world of PSR. There's lots of positives to hold onto - we kept our star players, Tonali is back, key players who were injured last season can have a big impact this year (Pope, Barnes, Willock, Joelinton) and Howe didn't leave for England. There's been *some* decent signings. Kelly is a handy squad option who improves our depth at LB/LCB and I am hopeful Osula can develop into a good PL striker under Howe. However, failure to qualify for European football put pressure on a big 2024/25, to not only keep this 'ambitious project' moving forwards but to also make sure we are in a position to keep world class talents like Bruno and Isak this time next year. We can still have a good season, but we've cocked up this summer on too many fronts and have to learn from our mistakes ASAP if we're serious about becoming a club that regular competes for Champions League football alongside the 'big six.' Hoping for a good end to 2024 on the pitch and a much better 2025 off it, where we should have plenty 'headroom' and money to spend after very little investment over the past two transfer windows.
