Sorry but the discourse around Tyla’s identity has exposed something that deserves to be called out: expecting Africans to understand themselves primarily through a Black American racial framework, while refusing to engage with African’s countries’ racial hierarchies and colonial histories, is a form of xenocentrism that has already become xenophobic in this case. At some point there has to be intellectual curiosity from BA. Black Americans are not the only Black people with histories of racialisation, colonialism or oppression. South Africa’s racial classifications for example emerged from a distinct colonial and apartheid system with its own categories, meanings and consequences. Those histories cannot simply be overwritten by an American understanding of race, simply because Tyla wants to market herself to the BA audience. It doesn’t work like that. Tyla did not invent South Africa’s racial hierarchy any more than Black Americans invented Jim Crow or the one-drop rule. Both are products of white supremacy, but they developed differently in different places. Expecting her to reject the identity that was historically imposed, negotiated and understood within her own country simply to satisfy an American racial framework is insane.

Re- watching this season and I feel Y’all calling Aniya insecure are projecting. That woman is secure as hell. She knows exactly who she is, what she’s worth, and what she deserves. She carries herself like someone who knows she’s not settling for less. Setting boundaries on her body and refusing to keep people around who disrespected or humiliated you isn’t insecurity. All the reasons she gave for choosing KC were about how he made her feel, how he was always there for her, and how much he did for her. Not once did she talk about what she actually loves, admires, or values about him as a person. She chose him because of what he provided, not because of who he is. It literally proves KC’s point when he said he poured into her while she never poured back into him. Idc KC made the right decision #loveislandusa

That’s why I love the dynamic between KC and Aniya’s relationship so far. There are a lot of layers to it that many people don’t see. It highlights a problem that happens in a lot of real life relationships. Sometimes the feelings and effort are one sided. One person is giving it their all, while the other person mostly values how that person makes them feel. That’s why I respect KC for ending things when he felt he wasn’t getting what he needed from the relationship. A lot of people stay in situations like this and keep giving more and more of themselves, hoping things will change. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. But once you start realizing the position you’re in, those feelings can turn into frustration, regret, and even resentment. You could see some of that in the comments KC made about Aniya in Casa. They didn’t come from a place of hate. They came from a place of realization, he felt like he was doing everything he could and it still wasn’t enough. At the end of the day, your life and your emotions are yours. If you’re not happy with what you and your partner have, you have every right to walk away. It’s not even about being a bad person or hurting the other person. It’s about doing what’s best for YOU and YOU alone. Some people may call it selfish, but it’s your life.
