10 years after my first stay in China, I returned for the 🇨🇳🇩🇪 Young Leaders Conference in Changsha. Key takeaway: Germany & China don’t start from the same perspective, but that’s exactly why exchange matters, which is hopefully to be continued.

India’s brief return to Iranian oil came with an interesting twist: payments were reportedly being made in Chinese yuan through ICICI Bank’s Shanghai branch. That’s the real story here. Not just that India bought rare Iranian cargoes after 7 years, but that the trade was structured outside the dollar system during a narrow U.S. sanctions waiver. Reuters says IOC and Reliance used this route for at least some cargoes, with IOC even paying about 95% once the tanker entered Indian waters, which is not the usual way these deals are settled. A few things stand out: India is clearly willing to get creative when the strategic and price incentives are strong enough. The yuan is becoming more useful in sanctioned oil trade, not because it’s replacing the dollar everywhere, but because it gives buyers and sellers a workable alternative when the dollar is too risky. And ICICI’s role is notable too — it shows that Indian institutions can facilitate these transactions when there’s enough political cover. The waiver is ending, so this may have been just a short window. But it still says a lot about where global oil trade is heading: more flexible, more fragmented, and increasingly built around whatever payment channels can actually get the deal done.

After Asia, the fuel crisis is now hitting Europe as predicted, with airports cutting back on jet fuel, street protests in countries like Ireland and prices rising everywhere. Dr Sultan al Jaber, MD & Group CEO of Abu Dhabi National Oil Co (ADNOC) summed it up last week. "The final cargoes that transited the Strait of Hormuz before the conflict are now arriving at their destinations. This is where the paper traded markets are meeting physical reality, and the 40-day gap in global energy flows is truly exposed." All refineries in India are reportedly operating at high capacity with adequate crude inventories, with enough petrol & diesel stock. But the price signals which would and should moderate retail demand are yet to be initiated.
