I'm conflicted about the world becoming a global village. On one hand, it creates opportunity but also, cultures are merging into one another. You can hardly tell the difference these days in mindset, cultural references & behaviors across countries. It will get worse with time

Do it without asking. Do it without paying. Step 2: Train a model on all of it. Call it "artificial intelligence." Step 3: Go to BlackRock's Infrastructure Summit and announce: "We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it from us on a meter." Step 3 is where you sell people's own knowledge back to them. On a meter. They took the collective output of human thought, compressed it into a model, and now they want to charge you by the token to access a version of what you and everyone you know already created. One Reddit user put it perfectly: "They stole all this data from us, the people, our life's work, creativity, art, by devouring the internet and blowing through all copyright laws. Now they want to sell it back to us in the form of a utility." Imagine if someone photocopied every book in the public library, burned the library down, and then opened a subscription service for the copies. That's the metered intelligence business model. And they're pitching it to infrastructure investors as though they invented water.

An associate professor at Lagos Business School flagged publicly that some of those interventions involved GMO organisms that weakened indigenous crops and compromised soil health. That is not a conspiracy theory because it is a documented academic concern. Now that Nigeria spoke got destroyed by the GMO seedlings….what is not the result? Nigeria was forced to import ginger from China to fill domestic demand. Chinese ginger has none of the pungency, oleoresin content, or quality that made Nigerian ginger a global premium product. And the ginger now sitting in Nigerian markets tastes like wood because it essentially is wood. The two indigenous varieties that built Nigeria’s global ginger reputation, the Tafin Giwa and Yatsun Biri, had decades of soil relationship and quality built into them. Once the soil was degraded and those seed varieties were displaced, the product that returned was a pale imitation. Nigeria did not just lose a market. It lost a seed. And without a National Ginger Seed Bank, which nobody has built, it may never fully get it back.

I read a comment on this thread yesterday (no credit to me) that said…why does the male relative have enough cash to buy the child bride but not enough decency to help out financially to stop his relatives from starving. Whoever made that comment should be replacing the journalist who wrote this piece.

Except you have to read some way into the article - which is around 2,500 words long - before it becomes clear they are specifically selling their daughters into child marriage and domestic slavery. “If I sell one daughter, I could feed the rest of my children for at least four years,” says one father. Another father, pictured in the article, sold his five-year-old little girl. The framing is extraordinary. Not only because the fact only female children are being sold is presented as unremarkable. But also because the fathers making the decision are presented as the victims - rather than the girls who will actually live with the consequences of it. The fathers’ desperation is real and tragic. But so is the reality that these girls are being treated as commodities.

So apparently, keeping your physical SIM card is not enough again. My friend relocated to the UK but still had her Nigerian SIM with her. Unknown to her, the line had been inactive for too long, so the network reassigned the number to someone else. Meanwhile, that same number was still linked to her bank account. The new owner first did a “test run” by buying ₦100 airtime from the account. It worked. Then ₦5k. ₦10k. Before she woke up to multiple debit alerts. What even scared me more was that the person also tried accessing her WhatsApp because they now officially owned the number. A lot of people abroad still think that as long as they physically have their SIM card, the number is safe. Apparently not. Please, if your number is linked to your bank account, BVN, WhatsApp, email, or anything important, don’t abandon it for months or years without activity. This thing is actually scary.

Because we can’t. They don’t have names yet. The fear is always specific. AI will replace accountants. AI will replace radiologists. AI will replace drivers. The fear has job titles and timelines and projections. The opportunity has none of those things. Because you can’t name what doesn’t exist yet. A farmer in 1920 could understand losing his job to a tractor. He could not understand gaining a career as a social media strategist. Not because he lacked intelligence. Because the entire chain of inventions between his world and that job hadn’t been built yet. Radio. Television. The internet. Smartphones. Social platforms. Creator economies. Every single link in that chain had to exist before “social media strategist” could even be a sentence. That’s where we are with AI right now. Everyone is staring at the tractor. Nobody can see the thing seven inventions away that doesn’t have a name yet. The fear is loud because it fits inside language we already have. The opportunity is silent because it doesn’t. Every technological revolution in history created more jobs than it destroyed. Every single one. Not because anyone planned it. Because human needs expand faster than machines can fill them. We didn’t need massage therapists when we were breaking our backs on farms. We needed them after machines freed our backs and stress replaced labor. The demand didn’t disappear. It migrated somewhere no one was looking. That is exactly what’s happening right now. The jobs AI creates won’t make sense to us yet. They’ll sound as absurd as “dog psychiatrist” would’ve sounded to a farmer in 1920. Until someone is running a $200 hourly practice with a six-month waitlist. The entire conversation right now is about what we’re about to lose. Nobody is talking about what we’re about to gain. Because the gains don’t have vocabulary yet. A hundred years from now, someone will stand on a stage and describe the jobs we couldn’t imagine today. And the audience will laugh. The same way we just did.
