@CoachDoty Love it. Last year we put “Trust” on the back of our practice jersey as that was our theme for year.

Last year we put names on the back of our game jerseys. This year we put names on the back of our practice jerseys as well. After reading Malcolm Gladwell’s, “The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference,” I felt something as simple as connecting the team name on the front of the uniform to the player’s family name on the back could add value. What value can it add? 1) There is an added sense of belonging for student-athletes when their last name is associated directly with the school’s name and brand identity. 2) The Stickiness Factor. The stickiness factor is the ability of certain things to capture our attention and stay in our mind compared to others. Names on jerseys help student-athletes be recognized and remembered for their performance. This can assist in recruiting, NIL, fan and community connection and more. 3) Teams that are player-focused understand it’s all about the student-athlete. At the end of the day most modern athletes want their name on their jerseys. 4) Family association: Deion Sanders said it best when he was coaching at Jackson State, “Is it that expensive to put the darn names on the back of the jerseys? Don’t you think his mama and them want to see their baby’s name on the back of the jerseys? Don’t you think his siblings, his family, his friends, his loved ones? That’s the kind of stuff we take for granted. I don’t. I’m very detailed. That guy worked his butt off, did what he had to do, changed his whole thought process. We can at least put his darn name on the back of his jersey.” 5) Player ownership of performance: A student-athlete represents the name on the front of the jersey and on the back. It is more difficult to run from their performance, production, wins and losses when their name is attached to it. This goes for practice as well if names are on the back of practice uniforms.

Dear @OBABBall , another league IMO just water downs the competition level even more. Top players already have options in JUEL and OSBA. This G league seems like direct competition to JUEL , IMO.

Dear @OBABBall , why another league? Isn’t OBA, OBLX, JUEL and OSBA enough ????? Makes me wonder if this another money grab !!! I can recall when having the OBA was sufficient. I can understand JUEL and OSBA but let’s face it the OBL was only created to stop other leagues.

If you don’t get clear answers to all (or most) of those questions then it would be a red flag for me. Finding the right fit for your child is so much more important for their development and enjoyment than being on the “best” team.

- How many out of town tournaments are planned?
- (If playing recreational/house league) Will the club be offering a “Selects” team (essentially an all-star team from the pool of recreational players)?

- What is the team’s philosophy on winning? And how will this affect how playing time is awarded?
- How many players will be kept on the team?
- What is the expected practice to game ratio? (depends on age of players but should be 2:1 at the very least)

- Who will be coaching the team? (and then speak to others who have played for said coach - requires some extra leg work but is worth it)
- What kind of support, if any, do the coaches receive? (training, mentoring, accountability etc)

Advice for parents! Decisions about where your child will play their organized 🏀 are just around the corner. Unfortunately, players end up in not great situations b/c the most important factors weren’t considered. Here are some tips to find the best fit for your child:

Anyone looking to play college ball in Canada this fall? @coachbballTM and Dalhousie University are looking for some players especially if you’re a big who has a big presence inside and can crash the boards. Being a transfer is also a plus. Shoot her a message! ❤️

@jdrice Totally agree. I have also been on stands just as a fan and often feel like passing out applications to be both a coach and a ref !

@nextgenballer That article hit it right on the head. As a ref sitting waiting for my game I see it on a regular basis. Parents think they are Jimmy V but have no clue on the rules. I almost think that parents should take a rules exam so they can see how little they know.

Our @NTBasketBall U16 Girls team has two injured players now, Lizzie (ankle) and Lauren (knee). Haven't played in over 3 weeks. BUT...they've been at every practice, shooting off one foot or sitting and dribbling. Their commitment to the team and improving is unquestionable.

Certain coaches will bring out the best out of certain players. Whether you're playing JUEL Prep, JUEL, OSBA, Rep or AAU, make sure you find your fit. Don't just go to a team because your friends are there, your parents want you to go, or it just seems cool. Always advocate.
