The Southwest Development Commission, created barely a year ago (March 26, 2025), has just secured a provisional Rail Operating and Track License from the Nigeria Railway Corporation. As planned, the project will revive old unserved routes. It will connect all 6 Southwest states: Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti through a 44-city rail network to boost industries and GDP. Between 2000 and 2026, NDDC has supervised around N8 trillion in cumulative budget. The North East Development Commission has received over N1.5 trillion since its creation in 2017. Yet, the most recently created regional development commission is advancing on city-to-city rail transport infrastructure. When this is achieved, some people will excuse the failure from their end by saying they used federal money to develop the Southwest and abandoned others. Are the leaders in your geopolitical zone/region serious about development? Do they have a collective vision? Do you hold them accountable? Do you even care?

This latest upgrade by S&P follows similar positive rating actions in 2025 by Fitch Ratings and Moody's Ratings. It further reinforces growing international confidence in Nigeria’s economic reform trajectory, policy consistency, and medium-term growth prospects. These independent assessments collectively affirm that the difficult but necessary reforms undertaken under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, are yielding measurable results and laying the foundation for a more stable, transparent, and resilient economy. In particular, S&P highlighted improvements in Nigeria’s external position, stronger balance of payments dynamics, increased oil production, expanding domestic refining and export capacity, and the sustained implementation of key macroeconomic reforms including foreign exchange market liberalisation. The agency also recognised ongoing fiscal reforms aimed at broadening the tax base, improving public revenue mobilisation, enhancing fiscal transparency, and strengthening debt sustainability. Notably, Nigeria’s debt-to-revenue ratio has improved significantly since 2023 and is projected to decline further as reforms continue to mature. The upgrades by Fitch, Moody’s, and now S&P send a strong signal to global investors, development partners, financial markets, and the international business community that Nigeria is regaining macroeconomic credibility and restoring confidence in the management of its economy. The government remains firmly committed to prudent fiscal management, macroeconomic stability, and structural reforms that promote inclusive and sustainable growth. We have maintained our position against the reintroduction of inefficient fuel subsidies which historically created significant fiscal distortions, incentivised smuggling, weakened foreign exchange liquidity, and diverted scarce public resources away from critical national priorities. We remain committed to a market-driven economy anchored on transparency, competition, and effective regulatory oversight. Accordingly, the Federal Government will continue to uphold policies that support free enterprise, respect private investment, and provide a stable and predictable environment for businesses and investors to thrive. While these positive ratings developments are encouraging, we recognise that the work ahead remains substantial. We are focused on addressing inflationary pressures, improving food security, expanding decent job opportunities, and ensuring that economic growth translates into meaningful and inclusive prosperity for all Nigerians. The Federal, States and Local Governments will continue to implement reforms with discipline, pragmatism, and compassion while maintaining close engagement with citizens and all stakeholders. Observations: We are, to a troubling extent, a dishonest people. Even in what appears to be a fairly random test, about 75% of those observed displayed clear signs of dishonesty and corruption. 3 out of the 4 shop owners extended their shop structures over the drainage. Only the man in the third slide respected the boundary. Predictably, he also came across as the most disciplined and principled of those that were tested. This is a microcosm of a much larger problem. You can draw a direct line from this kind of everyday behavior to why we are not making real and meaningful progress as a nation. The problem isn’t just at the top, every layer and fabric of our society has been corrupted. These kinds of people saturate our Executive arm of Government, law enforcement, judiciary, legislature, social security, religious spaces etc Now imagine individuals with these same tendencies being in charge of public funds, especially in situations where oversight is being handled by the same type of people in the test. We are not going to make it. Conclusion: It will take a miracle for us to make it. This is a rot that has infected every single layer of our society. Good people, great nation is mostly a joke.
