In a sales role, it is important to know the key product features. However, knowing the intricacies of the technical stack is probably not necessary and might be hurting your pitch. A sales role is knowing how to take the technical jargon and making it easily digestible for people to understand. TVL, TPS, ZK…enough already! Sometimes it feels like crypto teams keep coming out with new features that retail doesn’t even focus on. Yes these metrics are important, but might not be the top priority. For example, unused TVL for the sake of it isn’t contributing to your ecosystem. Showing up to a networking event, and getting contacts for the sake of it is not going to lead to meaningful business connections. Here are the top 3 things you should do before coming to a conference: 1) Be intentional: Who are you trying to meet and why? Lead with this in your conversations. If the person you are speaking to does not fit this, then maybe they know someone who does and can point you in the right direction. 2) Be picky with the events you attend: Do research before hand to see which companies will be at what. This helps you pre-filter through potential leads where your chances of having meaningful conversations in person are higher. 3) 60% structure, 40% serendipity: Have pre-scheduled dinners, meetings with partners, panels you want to attend 60% of the time. The other 40% should be flexible enough so you can meet people you otherwise wouldn’t have and create new plans on the fly when things come up - which is frequent. Building a L1 ecosystem is really about choosing a handful of projects you can invest in and grow together. Grants are ineffective especially when the team receiving it treats it like an investment - which it is not.
