The oldest Kentucky Derby winner for whom I have negatives is OLD ROSEBUD. OLD ROSEBUD won the 1914 Derby in record time and, in 10 years campaigning, 40 of 80 starts. This photo, by an unknown photographer, shows OLD ROSEBUD after his final win, 1921. He died the next year.

Throw up a hand if you remember when it wasn’t really Opening Day until this man had pumped one into the strike zone on a 38-degree afternoon in Cincinnati.

Keeneland Library will host an evening with author James C. Nicholson in conversation with historian Katherine C. Mooney on Wednesday, December 10. In Racing’s Return from the Brink, James C. Nicholson tells the story of Old Rosebud within the context of the volatile cultural and political environment of the early 1900s. Though his fame has since faded, Old Rosebud was one of the most talented racehorses of his era. Buy tickets → bit.ly/4pudXW6

the unlikely elements of a young band named The Beatles, an American heir who made England his racing home, and a foal who needed a wee nip of bourbon to find his legs. If you want to understand why we do what we do the way we do, Jamie's books provide kentuckypress.com/9780813180649/…

With the @KentuckyPress's annual Holiday Sale going on t/h 1/31/26, I wanted to highlight their unique connection to the sport of horse racing. Of course, being located in Kentucky makes UPK a destination for many an equine writer and @nicholsonjamesc , who also happens to helm
