I was looking for some photos for a feature story I'm working on for Friday, and I came across this image of Corvian Community from 2024, when the Charlotte-based charter school won the NCHSAA Western Regional championship.
If you ask me what sports, particularly high school sports, is all about, this picture, shot by @KellyHood, captures it perfectly
It's not about the scholarship you think you might get, but it's about the journey with your brothers, your sisters, the people you meet along the way, the friends you'll have 20 years later.
It's about the longtime coach, Corvian's Ron Murphy on the right, who had toiled in AAU and travel ball for years, getting close to the mountaintop but never quite reaching the stars, finally getting his just due.
Corvian lost a heartbreaker in the 2024 state final a few days after this picture, but a year later, Murphy got his elusive state title, putting an exclamation point on very good coaching career many wouldn't know about.
I still remember his team, finding redemption after losing in OT a year earlier, on the postgame podium in Winston-Salem after the 2025 state finals, tears mixed with smiles and elation. And I remember Murphy, overcome with emotion, hugging everyone, holding that big @NCHSAA championship trophy, and holding his players, and not wanting to leave that moment on that day.
That's what high school sports is all about.
Anyway, off my soap box and back to work.

Because everything does work out… as long as you’re not a BAN.

Men can stay up till 2 a.m, wake up at 6 a.m, be in debt, broke, alone, and still have faith that one day, everything will work out.

10 days until Winthrop MBB is back! @andersbroman10 (2015–18), brother of Bjorn, is a reliable shooter and defender. @nick_j10 (2023–25), who graduated in May, left his mark with solid perimeter play. Both wore #10 and played key roles in two different eras of Winthrop’s success.

Congrats to these three: Kelton Talford, Nick Johnson, and KJ Doucet on their continued careers overseas. They will always have a home here at Winthrop but now they are onto their pro careers!
