Much African development finance "advice" repeats obvious but broad “must-dos” focused on government financing not business. Some basics, like protecting the value of citizen's hard-earned savings will go a longer way. @nicktandi/note/c-266323204" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">substack.com/@nicktandi/not…

I have been arrested. My passport seized. My citizenship stripped. As I write, @HStvNews , @bbmhlanga @olgamuteiwa and @FaithZaba sit in our courts for telling the truth to power. Some of us have already paid. Some of us are paying still. We have no intention of stopping. These past few weeks I saw a glimpse of the Zimbabwe I have dreamed of all my life. I watched the Flag fill our timelines. I watched strangers across class and politics draft submissions to Parliament. I watched ordinary citizens take time off the daily hustle just to be counted. For a brief and beautiful moment, we remembered who we are. Make no mistake. Ian Smith's white minority rule has been replaced by ZANU PF's repressive black minority rule. The fuel cartel. The procurement carnival around Tagwirei, Chivayo and Tungwarara. Wealth that tracks state tenders, not honest markets. We will not be freed by another strongman. We will be freed by strong institutions and an awake citizenry. The nation and the Constitution above party. Country before everything else. Read the full essay 👇 open.substack.com/pub/allthingsz…

@drDendere @begottensun City management dilemma: informality concentrates poverty and public bads. Criminalisation of informality treats symptoms of poor economic policy and is ineffective. Practical approach is to "facilitate" gradual (re) formalisation.

@begottensun No one wants to do this. No one dreams to one day do this. Poverty is cruel. Might be one of the most cruel inflictions on society. Poverty comes with an inexplicable desperation. The behavior is not okay but so is poverty. We are lucky to never have been desperately poor.

The closure of City Press in South Africa is more than the end of a newspaper; it is a reminder of the crisis facing journalism across the globe. Shrinking revenues, changing audience habits, platform dominance, and declining trust are forcing even historic newsrooms to shut down. When media institutions die, accountability suffers, and public memory fades. The question is no longer whether the media is in crisis; it is whether journalism can reinvent itself fast enough to survive.

@baba_nyenyedzi We can do a lot more to market Zimbabwe as is and dispel myths that linger. Vic Falls needs coordinated marketing by 2 countries. Also, Vic Falls can be managed by a company.

What is the best introduction to Zimbabwe for a first-time visitor? We have a hundred quiet places that would make anyone remember they have a soul. Yet we often market the country as if beauty can advertise itself. It cannot. Beauty needs witnesses, storytellers, good photography, and people who understand that tourism is theatre as much as geography. Are we doing enough to promote Zimbabwe as a tourist destination, or are we still behaving like a country that assumes the world will find us by accident? We are on the banks of the Ume River, one of the tributaries into Lake Kariba with the mountainous Matusadona heights as a background. Best Friday drinks sundowner . Tiger Bay Africa Safari

@DavidColtart 1. Day 1. Revise/remove forex regulations (investors can repatriate profits; exchange rate market based). 2. Day 2. Start truth and reconciliation process. 3. Day 3. Deregulation taskforce to help me ID & remove 1 stupid regulation every week.

1. Restore the rule of law; 2. Fundamentally change our budget priorities, shifting money away from the corrupt elite to education, housing, health & roads; 3. Slash the size of Cabinet & their perks and appoint Ministers known for their integrity and competence.

He didn't just serve during the apartheid era. He was a key protagonist in the transition to democracy, often a measured voice in the heated atmosphere AND became Minister of Constitutional Affairs in Mandela's 1994 cabinet. He clashed bitterly with FW De Klerk and cautioned against his party, the NP, walking away from the Government of National Unity. He left the NP over this. So he is not just ONE thing. Tsek with that framing. You CAN write "served during South Africa's apartheid era AND democratic transition."

@ClaysonMonyela The number of people in the image did not add up. Cops and suspects posing like officials who just signed a trade deal mmmmm. Could not tell in an instant. But pretty clear after the fact.

In terms of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations (1963), Uganda has to inform the 🇿🇦 Embassy when our nationals are arrested. This has not happened. Either these fellows are not South African, their documents are fraudulent or the story is fake. We will monitor & update accordingly.
