Here's where it gets weird: 3-6 thousand years ago the Amazon rainforest didn't exist as we know it. It was a dense, nearly impenetrable bamboo forest. Then a group of people entered and started burning it. They brought in and planted fruit and nut trees and various other tropicals and edibles. They created a massive, cultivated garden. They constructed towns and villages and made huge geometric earthworks virtually identical to the ones in North America. The towns were connected by leveled roadways. Nearly 1000 of these have now been found. The population of the Amazon in 1492 is now believed to have been 10 million people. Shortly after the first Spanish entered the area around 1500, the population dramatically declined from disease and it's thought that 99% of them were gone by 1550. The untended garden areas quickly became overgrown creating the rainforest. As the destruction of the rainforest continues due to clearing land for agriculture, more and more of these geometric earthworks are being uncovered. Sources: More than I can list, but the National Geographic has sponsored a lot of the ongoing research.

Deep integration not only between Euro-America, but also between Southern/Central Chinese Coastal Area (vs North / Policy Centre) and Europe. Common thread: political leadership in both China & US is officially dead-set against European integration and belittles it. But in reality all sorts of capital centers in bot h countries are deeply integrating. @ektrit On top of that, consumer electronics companies are easy to take advantage for next decade for Chinese partners (Sony, Electrolux...) - but that is another topic.

Chinese battery manufacturer Calb has broken ground on a €2 Billion gigafactory in southern Portugal which is expected to represent more than 4% of the country’s GDP when in full swing.

@AbC967041505 Surprisingly similar in ethics and demeanor. People who don't work have no purpose. One of the basic tensions of life, for rich and poor alike. One thing I will give the British aristocracy - they always had a project to work on

It seems to be that only a very tiny minority of people are actually capable of decoupling their identity from their ideas, examining their ideas logically in an impersonal way, and courageously changing their position when they realize the insufficiency of their own arguments. What I mean here is: the vast majority of people subscribe to the ideas they subscribe to primarily for SOCIAL or SENTIMENTAL reasons. These commitments act as an impediment to the exercise of reason, and as handicaps with dealing with arguments. When you, for example, refute the central point of someone's ideological position, and present evidence for the refutation that the other party can't help but accept as valid -- it doesn't mean that the person is going to admit they're wrong and then change their position. They generally might, at best, say something like "huh, you might have a point there," forget the conversation, and move on. Because their social ties hinge upon their ideological commitments, and they basically value those ties more than they value truth or reason, the rational backdrop of their ideological disposition is totally secondary (or perhaps even not a factor at all). This really is a major problem not just at the personal level but at the societal level. Without reason, without the conventions of sound argument, and without solid epistemological ground on which to find what is and is not factual, "ideology" or really any form of thought becomes purely social-emotional, and is divorced from anything resembling truth. In that sort of climate, the only way to change society or to change the behaviors of people for the better is to influence their social betters in the hierarchies they interact with to adopt a more rational idea... In other words, when ideas become social-emotional accessories rather than substantive expressions of a well-reasoned argument, culture becomes the product of a soft and mostly informal series of status hierarchies and not much more. If you are in the tiny minority of people who really will engage with what is true and rational regardless of the social consequences of doing so -- this state of affairs can and will drive you absolutely crazy. It will make you cynical. And you will quickly begin to understand why the idea of aristocracy ever emerged.

The Roman Catholic Church has 400,000 ordained priests, 1.5 billion adherents, over 1000 universities around the world, and the highest possible claim to ultimate moral and intellectual authority. Why do they need input and commentary from any outside experts?
Mark R. Yzaguirre@markyzaguirre

@mmjukic No, the Vatican asked for input and commentary from experts in a field it was going to comment on. That isn’t anything new and it’s good that they didn’t approach AI from a closed intellectual silo. And the rest of your comments are warmed-over early 2000s New Atheism.

@Porkchop_EXP @eugyppius1 AfD is a Russian sponsored party and tool of Putin, and therefore a national security risk. It won't be allowed to take power. An actual right wing party would be allowed but not one that would threaten the existence of Germany.

@ektrit Great brief, v. interesting. On the Spain-North Africa dynamic: supply chains becoming a function of moral belief. Empire Europe, Hanseatic league, Venice - even US/USSR largely - were value-neutral in trade. Return to medieval times.

@DrMichaelBonner Probably because it's targeted at English-speaking heretical Western / American AI freaks who are attempting to supplant God with AI and declare a war of subjugation on humanity under the guise of liberation.
