A report indicates that the once-thriving Gentle Monster brand, formerly known for its "Jennie glasses," has seen its first sales decline in five years, with operating profit falling by more than 24%. Both its eyewear and cosmetics (Tamburins) brands experienced decreased sales.
The continuous sales growth of four years has stalled. It has been revealed that the performance of Gentle Monster, best known for its “Jennie sunglasses,” fell short of expectations last year.
Operating profit declined for the first time in five years. II Combined, the operator of Gentle Monster, had total revenue of only 772.3 billion won last year, a 2.1% decrease from the previous year (789.1 billion won). Operating profit was 177 billion won, a 24.3% decrease compared to the previous year (233.8 billion won). II Combined operates multiple brands, including Gentle Monster eyewear and Tamburins cosmetics.
The company's core businesses, eyewear and cosmetics, performed poorly. Sales in the eyewear segment were 604.9 billion won, a 1.5% decrease from the previous year. During the same period, sales in the cosmetics segment also decreased by 7.3% to 152.5 billion won.
These results were below market expectations. After achieving sales of 209.5 billion won in 2020, II Combined experienced four consecutive years of rapid growth until 2024, reaching sales of 322 billion won in 2021, 410 billion won in 2022, and 608.2 billion won in 2023. Particularly during the boom of K-brands in the fashion and beauty markets, some even predicted that II Combined's sales would surpass 1 trillion won last year, but that projection ended this year.
