We must be honest about reentry: the first question is not simply whether someone can work immediately. The first question is whether that person has identification, food, health care, treatment, and the documentation needed to stabilize. Reentry succeeds when government, workforce, and health systems work together with discipline and purpose. Link to Article: bit.ly/424nVnD . . . @NJGov @NJDHS @NJ_MVC @NJLaborDept

NJRC’s Peer Recovery CPRS Training begins today. This 8 day, certificate based program provides structured training in recovery coaching, ethical practice, and behavioral health system navigation. Participants gain the competencies required to support individuals in long term recovery while meeting the education requirements for the New Jersey Certified Peer Recovery Specialist credential. Programs like this create a direct pathway to employment and strengthen clinically informed, community based recovery support systems.

Governor Jon Corzine spoke about a core idea during his remarks at this year’s NJRC Conference: Trauma and Healing. He said that “every human being deserves dignity and to be treated with dignity,” whether in the criminal justice system or the mental health system. He also underscored the importance of focusing on the individual, stating that “it’s one person that you’re trying to deal with,” and that if this approach were reflected in policies and responses, “we’d have a much better system going forward.” At NJRC, this principle is reflected in measurable outcomes. NJRC’s verified reincarceration rate is 14.01%, compared to 22% statewide in New Jersey and 27% nationally. These results reflect the impact of a service-intensive reentry model that focuses on the individual and supports Second Chances and long-term stability. . . @NJGovOffice

For the wounded, the addicted, the court-involved, and the traumatized, the story of the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13) means that despair is not destiny. Christ meets them on the broken road, honors their pain, tells the truth about their lives, and leads them toward healing, dignity, and renewed purpose.

Governor Donald DiFrancesco spoke about the evolution in how society understands domestic violence, emphasizing that it is no longer dismissed as a private dispute but recognized as a pattern of coercive control and a serious public safety issue. He also underscored a barrier that remains deeply consequential: access to resources. Victims often lack the financial means and institutional support needed to navigate a complex legal system, particularly when trauma, children, and the need to relocate are involved. At NJRC, expanding access to care and coordinated support for women remains central to this work. Through NJRC Women’s Services, NJRC has served 6,427 court-involved women, connected 2,127 women to mental health care, supported 2,212 women with medical care, and helped 952 women secure employment or educational placement.

Governor Thomas Kean reflected at NJRC’s 2026 Conference on Trauma and Healing on his early childhood experience with dyslexia, recalling the challenges of growing up in a system that did not yet understand learning differences. He spoke movingly about the lasting impact of that experience and the role a few teachers played in helping him find a different path, noting that without their support, his life may have unfolded very differently. NJRC reflects that same principle in practice: that timely intervention, support, and human encouragement can alter the course of a life. Through its wraparound reentry model, NJRC has served 31,651 participants and secured 14,246 jobs for work-eligible participants, helping men and women find a path toward long-term stability.

Governor Mikie Sherrill opened NJRC’s 2026 Trauma and Healing Conference, describing reentry as a justice, public safety, and human dignity imperative grounded in her early work launching New Jersey’s first federal reentry court, where she saw that employment, mental health care, diversion, and wraparound services are essential to helping people returning from incarceration rebuild stable lives and avoid becoming trapped in a cycle of reoffending. NJRC’s work reflects that approach in action. Through integrated services including job training and legal support, NJRC has helped tens of thousands of individuals stabilize their lives, restore identification, resolve legal barriers, and reconnect with the workforce.

Second Chance Month highlights a core public health reality: behavioral health intervention is central to successful reentry. Psychiatric illness, trauma, and substance use disorder are strongly associated with incarceration and continued system involvement. NJRC addresses these factors through coordinated, clinically driven care. Through this approach, NJRC has delivered measurable outcomes: • 12,964 individuals receiving coordinated medical treatment • 9,310 connected to psychiatric and behavioral health services • 13,012 addiction treatment referrals • 6,754 receiving medication assisted treatment • 24,339 Medicaid enrollments supporting continuity of care These outcomes demonstrate that addressing behavioral health is a core intervention to reduce recidivism and support long-term stability.
