I will follow the timeline, from the second test of the game #MaplestoryU to today, to tell every stupid operation decision made by the team and the negative impact on the entire ecosystem. In the second test, it was originally a 10-day ranking competition, and then the file was deleted. This ranking competition had a very dramatic scene. The competition was divided into two parts: enhance consumption of #NESO and transaction volume in the market. The interesting thing is that the market transaction has only a 5% handling fee, so you only need to take a high-value item and trade back and forth between two accounts to get a very high ranking. All players don’t know whether this is a loophole in the event or the team wants us to participate in this event in this way. And the team did not convey accurate information on how to participate in this ranking. Therefore, the players are divided into two factions, one is to brush back and forth, and the other is to buy normally. As far as I know, some players who brush back and forth have their rankings deleted, and some have not been deleted. This caused the community to panic in the days before the event ended, and they were all worried about their rankings. This was the first operational error of the MapleStory team. As the server was about to be shut down, the value of gold coins and honor points in the market would be zero, so a large number of players consumed honor points to buy broadcast props, and even many players directly destroyed their equipment or sold them at extremely low prices. At this time, the team issued a heavy announcement: the second test will be postponed for 20 days, and the equipment can be saved until the public beta. And we found that before the announcement was issued, a lot of very low-priced equipment was bought by several addresses. I don’t understand why players would buy a lot of equipment just before deleting the files and shutting down the server. At the beginning of the gearup event, a large number of cheaters began to enter the game. They produced a large amount of neso and sold it at a price close to 1USDT/neso. This caused dissatisfaction among a large number of players, so the official banned some of the player accounts that bought these neso in the market. This led to another problem. Many players actually didn’t know whether the neso they bought was obtained through cheating. These loyal players were directly banned and lost all their assets. At this time, the community gave the team a very valuable suggestion: suspend the output of low-level hunting grounds. Put the output in higher-level hunting grounds, so that cheaters need dozens or even hundreds of hours to start output, which also provides sufficient time for the team to ban cheaters. Or put the output in hunting grounds with star force requirements, and open high-level star force hunting grounds at the same time. However, the team did not care about these pertinent suggestions, but changed from banning all addresses that interacted with cheater addresses at the beginning to only banning cheater addresses. This makes cheaters more rampant, because for cheaters, they have almost no cost. Therefore, they can sell their nesos at a very low price. This is the second operational error of MapleStory. At the same time, we need to consider a problem. Due to the gearup event, this is actually very unfair to newcomers who join the game when the official server is opened. Many new players choose to wait and see for this reason instead of entering the market. This is the third possible operational error of MapleStory. During the five-month wait, we expected the MapleStory team to adjust the enhance consumption and the output of low-level hunting grounds, but all this was just a fantasy of the community. Until the official server was launched. The MapleStory team used a large number of tokens to reward exchange users, and the number of these tokens was far greater than the number given to MapleStory game players. Taking Binance as an example, NXPC's airdrop to binance reached 3% of the total, while the total circulation was only 16.9%. So you can see that the Nexon team spent at least nearly 90M to list on Binance. And the selling pressure of these tokens was completely transferred to the game players. At the same time, exchanges such as bybit and kucoin also have a lot of airdrop activities. Therefore, at least more than 100 million US dollars of selling pressure must be borne by MapleStory players. This is the fourth operational error of the MapleStory team: they consumed a lot of costs for listing. This makes the team's need for capital recovery particularly urgent. Immediately after the MapleStory server was launched, it broke the theorem that almost all gameFi would not lose money on the first day of entry. All players who participated in the first day of mining have become miners themselves. Because of the problem with the equipment enhancement system, the enhancement cost on the first day is almost the highest cost in the next 1~2 weeks. Players consumed a large amount of NXPC with a price of about 3U in exchange for equipment that may only cost 30% of the cost in the next week. This is the fifth operational error of the MapleStory team: the price of equipment enhancement was not adjusted dynamically. At the same time, we found that the output of dungeons and hunting grounds was so low that there was almost no output. Out of trust in the team, many players were still enhancing equipment and collecting NFTs. At this time, the team really issued a new announcement to adjust the output and increase the output. However, after one adjustment, this income still could not see the hope of making money. So the second adjustment began, greatly increasing the probability of producing fragments and reducing the expectation of neso output. After this adjustment, short-term players saw the benefits, so a large number of players began to enhance equipment and hype high-level equipment. However, from an economic perspective, the team's adjustment this time makes the economic model even more terrifying, because the player's income is mainly brought by the demand of new players to buy equipment, which seems to be no problem. However, we need to know that for a player to create an account that can pass the highest level dungeon, 85% of the cost is to enhance the equipment, and only 15% of the cost is to buy equipment in the market. 70%~80% of the player's income is borne by new players, and only 20~30% comes from the game. At the same time, there is a 5% transaction tax that sellers need to bear. Based on the monthly cycle, the team will extract at least 55% of the liquidity of the total assets from the ecosystem on average in one month. Usually, the life span of a game with such a model will not exceed 2 months. This is the sixth operational mistake of the MapleStory team: too much desire to make money, and the fees charged from the market are too high. At the same time, something more interesting happened. Players found that the gap between different professions can be almost twice as large. This seems to be a reasonable thing in WEB2 games, but it is unforgivable in web3 games. After testing, the Captain and Black Knight, who both have the same 1.1W panel attributes, have a damage difference of nearly 2 times when hitting a level 210 wooden stake. Black Knight wears 4 sets of level 150 equipment. The Captain only has 6 sets of level 140 equipment. This also leads to a huge difference in output with the same input. Because this determines whether an account can clear the two highest difficulty dungeons, Lotus and Damien. This is the seventh operational error of the MapleStory team: not balancing each profession in terms of damage, because the game has given mining attributes, and the ROI of each profession needs to be as close to the same as possible.
