Just got out of The Odyssey, and boy do I have thoughts.
It’s going to take me some time to organize them.
But here’s what I’ll say for now:
Nolan has made some of my favorite films of all time, but his obsession with speaking in parable to contemporary issues still keeps him from grasping the mythological.
It’s the most “supernatural” Nolan has ever been, but it still felt a bit like when the History Channel use to do series on Bible stories. There’s this anachronistic imposition of a modern worldview and values onto them that loses the deeper, original meaning.
You can miss timeless by getting stuck on the contemporary. Then you get stuck with the illusion of solutions to your contemporary problems, but new problems emerge because you’re still stuck in @jgreenhall “Game A.”
I will need to process more the message Nolan is trying to tell— and there’s a very obvious intent at a message in its clear deviations from Homer at crucial junctures.
But Nolan really wants to say that civilization can be saved. He has an instinct that these retelling these old stories play a part. That’s good.
But in my humble opinion, he still doesn’t understand what those stories mean—or, worse, he thinks he knows better.

@eliott__mogenet The language - way too plain. Lacked Gravitas. The least they could do was use Mother, Father instead of Mom and Dad.

Just watched the Odyssey in IMAX 70mm.
My 3 takeaways:
1. Indisputably the most epic and visually striking film I've ever seen. It'll certainly win Best Picture.
2. What surprised me most: it refuses to Hollywood-ize the myth the way Troy (2004) did. The Odyssey is not a story like any other : it's how Greek society saw the world 3,000 years ago: the omnipresence of the sea, the traditions, the place of the gods. Nolan's film keeps all of it.
3. Only caveat: the pacing. The story's so dense it races through some episodes to stay under 3 hours. Some parts could've been cut to let others breathe. The Laestrygonians, for instance, land as just another epic scene if you don't know they're Poseidon's sons.
The Odyssey avoids the trap Troy fell into 20 years ago, and stays epic doing it.

@blrcitytraffic why was this even permitted. People have been going in bumper to bumper traffic for the entire stretch of the ORR all the way from KR Puram. Which genius permitted this?

This Djokovic purgatory …. you rock up to majors with little prep and still get to the semifinals. Why on earth would you retire?…. Yet you are 39 y/o; three years removed from your last Major; needing need to play A+ tennis to beat the young stars.….#Wimbledon
