Back when I was Manager of the Rockies, Keli McGregor said something to me that changed everything: "I'm going to help you be a better man. Because if I grow the man spiritually, you'll have no choice but to be the best manager you can be." That's when I learned the difference between transactional and transformational leadership. Transactional leadership is giving to get. You do something for me, I'll do something for you. It's keeping score. It's leveraging relationships. Transformational leadership is giving so others can be the best version of themselves. No strings attached. No scoreboard. Just serving. I spent years looking for what I could get out of every relationship. Then I learned to stop keeping score altogether. Here's what I know: Nobody's going to let you coach them until they trust you. And trust comes down to three questions they're asking about you: Can I trust you? Do you care about me? Can you make me better? If you can't answer yes to all three, you're not leading. You're just taking a walk alone.
