Profile Dos and Don'ts on Upwork Most freelancers set up their profile once, forget about it, and wonder why nobody is hiring them. Today let's fix that. Here are the Profile Dos and Don'ts every freelancer needs to know 👇

Your profile is working for you 24 hours a day. Make sure it's doing the right job.

❌ DON'T ignore your profile after setting it up Your profile needs regular updates as you grow. ✅ DO review and refresh your profile every 14 days Update your bio and skill tags, add new portfolio pieces, and adjust your rate as your reviews grow.

✅ DO research market rates in your niche and price accordingly Look at what experienced freelancers in your category charge. Start at the lower end of that range, never below it.

❌ DON'T set your rate at $3–5/hour trying to compete on price You will attract the worst clients on the platform. And burn out fast.

❌ DON'T leave your portfolio empty An empty portfolio screams "I'm new and unproven." Even if you have no paid work yet, build sample projects. ✅ DO build portfolio pieces before you have clients Create 2-3 sample projects Proof of ability beats proof of employment every time.

❌ DON'T start your bio with "I am..." Clients don't open your profile to learn about you. They open it to find out if you can solve their problem. ✅ DO start your bio with their problem "Most businesses struggle with X. I fix that by doing Y." Lead with them. Not with you.

Here's where most freelancers get Reddit completely wrong. They find a post from a business owner who needs help, and they reply like this: "Hi, I'm a professional [skill] with 5 years of experience. I can help you with this. Check my portfolio: [link]. DM me for rates."

The freelancers winning on Reddit are not the most talented ones. They're the most helpful ones. Be that person consistently and the DMs will come.

The second response gives value. It shows expertise. It makes hiring you feel like a natural next step, not a sales pitch.

Good response: "The best starting point is usually 3 to 5 articles that target the problems your customers search for before they even know your product exists. Not features, symptoms. That approach builds traffic that actually converts.

Let me show you the difference with a real example. Someone posts: "I need blog posts for my business but I don't know where to start." Bad response: "I'm a professional writer with 5 years experience. DM me."

Step 3 - Mention casually that you do this professionally. One line. Not a pitch. Step 4 - Soft invite to DM. Never a hard sell.

Step 1 - Acknowledge their specific situation. Not "I understand your problem." Actually show them you read their post. Step 2 - Give one genuinely useful insight for free. A real tip. Something they can use even if they never hire you.
