Met an Uber driver in Colombia who I was surprised had a perfect Australian accent, said he’d been living in Australia for 15 years before the pandemic and had citizenship, and then worked a few years in NYC but had returned to Colombia I asked him where his favorite place to live was and his response was something like “hmmm probably Australia overall, but it changes and sometimes I feel I’m doing fine here and should just stay here.” Point is, if someone driving Uber is saying this, it shows the gap between the developed and developing world is closing. Neither the arbitrage nor the lifestyle differences are what they were even a few years ago. Still the myth prevails in the West that life anywhere outside of the West is extremely inferior, and its just not the case, so many factors go into quality of life that can’t be measured only in wages and crime stats
