It’s a superficially compelling offer though. Despite the great strides made under Thatcher and Blair, both have acquired reputations as folk villains since leaving office. As irrational as that might be, it creates space for a populist platform which rejects the past 40 years.

Burnham looked very nervous and, by trying to remember his script, somehow it was less authentic than if he just read off an autocue. The content was bizarre - harking back to the disastrous socialism of 1970s Britain as the solution to our problems in 2026.
