@deferikovich the 15 million stat was always so funny because how the fuck did a pre-industrial tropical “society” mostly dominated by thick rainforest have 15 million people to kill in the first place

2016, President Petro Poroshenko is the second politician who knelt in Warsaw after Willy Brandt. He is kneeling before the monument to the victims of the Volyn tragedy. The Polish society reacted very, er, extraudinarily: it didn't notice this move AT ALL. I am pretty sure that 99.9% of Poles don't remember it and have never known it. Because the Polish society doesn't want "apologies" and reconciliation, it wants TO CONSTANTLY DEMAND apologies and take the first place in the European VICTIMHOOD. So, probably, the Poles, who weirdly compare Jedwabne and Volyn, are somehow right: Volyn symbolically returns them the feeling of sacrifice and being a victim after they had to accept that Poles had willingly killed innocents in thousands. The Polish society can't still accept it, see how the commemoration has been taken place for years with bullying, denials and insults by the top-rank politicians. As a Ukrainian, I just don't understand this willingness to be an eternal victim, and we have no problems with accepting guilt for the past. We survived much bigger tragedies. Which is why I haven't understood why the Polish intellectuals refer to it, as it's a different story that has other analogues.
