Analytic philosopher writing formalisms that execute, mostly in finance. C++. Paradigms? Digs 'em. Puns! Brainstorms here too much. Too long-winded to use Twitt

Just heard this one today: Apparently French vampires have to be stabbed in the heart with a baguette, which is painstaking.

@smithjosephy It could be right, but I hate to be wrong. I agonized over The Standard more than any other name.

Here's a fun thread for journalism junkies, newspaper lovers and history buffs. I had the help of one of my Twitter followers, @BalanceTheCheck, who collected the names of hundreds of newspapers (The Herald, The Star, The Enquirer, etc.) which he put into a spreadsheet... 1/

@jayrosen_nyu Strunk & White's fave comes in here (mine, too): The delightfully mispunctuated News-Free Press of Chattanooga, which existed in the 40s and 50s. The unfortunate hyphen makes it sound like one of the Presses, with the odd feature of repudiating membership in your bin 2.

Bin 13: Newspapers named for the communication tech critical to their operation: The Press, the Telegraph, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. (From the internet era: The Cable, The Wire.) Bin 14: Onlookers and overseers: The Observer, The Spectator, the Daily Mirror. 16/

In Icelandic, "win" and "work" are the same word. Vinna.

So I just opened twitter in a new browser with no login and no existing cookies and twitter decided to show me everything in Czech. I do speak Czech, and I was born there, however I am nowhere near it, and nothing on my system is in Czech. How? Why? What? Where's my hat!

@keithfrankish Any responses you get will run into an anthropic-principle-like-thing: The people who see your question and respond are by definition... Well, you see the point.

@hyfante @CliffordSosis Upon reflection, perhaps this needs to be expanded to 'elenchebiakosmopantology', in a kind of mashup of Socrates with the Hitchhiker's Guide. Comes closer to taking in everything that is done in the discipline formerly known as 'philosopy'. I for one like it!

What Is It Like to Be a Philosopher?
I have never liked the fact philosophy is called philosophy. Wisdom is such a vague term. What does love have to do with anything? What should we call philosophy instead?

@rodgertq I've been getting these too -- though on a vehicle that has not (yet) been totaled. Is this the latest in phishing scams or something? Trying to steal my VIN? Seems strange to me.

Um, what am I missing here? Just saw this in a git bash window: Counting objects: 37% (455674/1231551) And it took its time getting up to 100% ... and 1231551/1231551.

One of the most stressful of businesses has to be keeping larger rabbit-like animals, because that would be hare raising.

George Eliot said that the greatest benefit of art is the extension of our sympathies. Which works of art do you think best achieve this aim? Which have significantly broadened your sympathies? (I'm particularly interested in literature, but feel free to mention any kind of art.)

The boss of the NYT op-ed page was fired because he ran a controversial op-ed by a sitting U.S. Senator. But a few months later, a propagandist for an authoritarian regime gets to argue that a violent putdown of peaceful protests was needed in the same pages. This is just nuts.
