I thought I'd give Unreal C++ another go, maybe learn how to make a plugin or something... ... it uh, it derailed REAL HARD. So I present: "Unreal running in #UnrealEngine5"

@pikuma I remember getting really good at controlling it with the numpad alone for movement. I thank Descent for making me cope with VR so well.

Descent II is now 30 years old. Its 3D engine was one of the first to allow true 6-degrees-of-freedom movement in a fully textured polygon environment. The game was developed by Parallax Software as a sequel to the original Descent. What made Descent II impressive at the time was how smooth its 3D gameplay felt on mid-90s PCs (486s and early Pentiums). The programming required a mix of clever engine design, heavy optimization, and some unusual rendering techniques for the era. One of its most important design decisions was going with a "portal-based" rendering. Rather than rendering one giant 3D map, the engine used a segmented cube structure. The game world was built from connected convex segments (basically cubes or prisms), and each segment connected to others through portals (doorways). The engine only rendered segments visible through portals, instead of the entire level. That meant a huge reduction in geometry to draw each frame. If you want to learn how to code a software-based 3D engine with 90s games in mind, don't forget to check out our lectures on 3D Graphics Programming: pikuma.com/courses/learn-…

The new YouTube player, sigh. The old playback speed key shortcuts don't work, so you click the settings icon, and it opens the menu on the other side of the world. If you click "more options", selecting any of them closes the menu. And there's no way to go "back" c'mon

The hardest part of building a new PC is trying to convince yourself that the thermal paste applied fine. It's fiiiine. If the temperatures are fine then it's FIIIIINE GOD DAMMIT

Ah Microsoft Access, a product that so many small businesses ran off for decades, despite it having a dedicated "Compact and Repair Database" menu option. Ever tried just not borking it up in the first place, bud?

It's always fun in movies when people are having an intense game of poker and someone slowly reveals their hand, and -not knowing poker- I have _zero_ idea if it's a good one or not. I love those "big reveal" moments in different areas that mean absolutely nothing sometimes.

I keep getting A/B tested the new YouTube UI, and every time it flips between new awful and old, the volume goes to 100%. It's amazing how long it takes to find the new volume slider location when under duress.

@redblobgames I know it's already a labored point, but I also miss being able to quickly differentiate the icons, without having to read the text instead because it's quicker than figuring out what icon in the sea of similarity is the one I want.

I still miss the old Gmail logo that looked like an envelope but also an M. So clever. The new one looks like an M but doesn't look like an envelope. thenextweb.com/news/gmail-has…

Thank goodness for the context, otherwise I'd be totally lost in finding out what was wrong! Amusingly, this was using Rust, assuming it'd be easier to compile something, but it ended up needing to build a C++ library anyway, so now I have 2 problems.

Must suck being a vampire realtor, and you've been asked to fill in for a sick colleague on a viewing to a house you've never been to before, and you have to ask potential buyers to please invite you in, and then they decide to squat instead.

Holy moly, Rosamund Pike does an _excellent_ South African accent in "Now you see me, now you don't", and her acting reminds me of every upperclass person who ever judged me growing up. Yay! But boo. But yay!

Cool, here's an idea though: how about NOT putting an always on-top pulsating overlay prompting me to click it if you know I have privacy settings enabled?

G Hub doesn't support my steering wheel. Uninstalling it DOES make it go into the alligator death roll, though.

"I think I'll use my steering wheel in VR tonight" I thought, 2 naive assumptions 1. charge+upgrade headset 2. sign into Meta 2.1 code to email 2.2 auth to SMS 3. launch Logitech softare 4. get game running in VR 5. wheel doesn't work The parallel port in DOS was easier.
