UN Open Source Conference 2025 Insights 
I wrote a report reflecting on how open source shapes digital sovereignty, public infrastructure, and global equity. Here’s a quick preview ↴

@benroy isn’t is well known that the average age of a successful startup founder is in their mid 40s

normally people make the case on either end of the spectrum i.e. you want young people because they're AI native or you want senior people with the leverage of AI, but I'll take the other side of that for now >the ideal founder today is 40 years old imo

I think the age group that's best positioned to take advantage of the AI moment is 35-45 year olds 'cause those people have old world training + domain expertise that young folks don't have & they're more adaptable in their work identity + more able to upskill than senior people

Women’s History Month may be coming to a close, but our commitment to women founders is year round. We’ll keep backing founders who challenge convention, expand possibility, and shape the future across crypto, AI, and emerging tech.

Also: enable experimentation. The ecosystem will need space to test new contribution and governance models.

Another possibility: Funding compute and infrastructure directly. Compute credits and testing infrastructure may become core support mechanisms for OSS projects.

If AI dramatically reduces the cost of writing and maintaining software, open source will have to rethink governance, funding, and sustainability. Lets look at funding:

at this point if you can build a project in a weekend, it's probably not worth doing work on things that will take 3+ months of pain, so your customers can't ship a replacement in half a sprint work on things that suck

The ecosystem is entering a new phase. AI will expand what’s possible in open source but the frameworks we build now will determine whether that expansion strengthens the commons (or not).

But in an AI-native development environment, contributions may start to look different: → compute credits → maintenance agents → automated testing infrastructure → security tooling

If AI agents begin participating in open source development at scale, every part of the ecosystem will need to adapt. Maintainers, companies, and funders all have a role to play. 🧵
