Do you walk into the light and take your @OathOfShadow? Or does the darkness whisper your name?

LONGGGGG incoming rant about web2 + web3 gaming
indie gaming is going to take over BIG time soon
watching this recent Nintendo Direct and the reactions from the pricing for the new console + games make me question the sustainability of how the gaming industry is currently operating. granted we're currently seeing times of economic hardship (cough recession cough) and companies in ALL industries are just forced to raise prices across the board
which makes me feel like this opens up a new opportunity for those creating ACCESSIBLE entertainment. in past times of economic hardship, entertainment industries were something that people turned to as a distraction from the bleak life we live - but entertainment has changed so drastically over the past few years, let alone decades
the free to play model and "doomscrolling" has permitted this change as it's allowed people to participate in connecting and engage in entertaining activities for nearly free, simply at the expense of some DLC or by selling your data (lol)
contrary to the current console model of purchasing a $500-600 console + $70 games + $80 controllers + xyz accessories - it goes to show why the uprise in mobile gaming and PC gaming has become so popular. we've already known this for a while, but what I'm witnessing right now is such a HUGE push back on the industry officially becoming too expensive for people
a lot of people genuinely just CANT keep up with affording the new hot thing - which to me leaves a new opening for Indie game developers to take the spotlight. games that are $15-$20 vs $60-70 appeal to a brand new audience. free to play is ideal but i know for myself, i'd rather just pay for a game outright than be constantly littered with DLC prompts and ads (unless you're EA, then you get both lol) - overall it raises a lot of concerns about the economic state of the world but also gaming isn't the basis of what defines that
what REALLY concerns me, when i consider all of this - is web3 gaming
sure, very different audiences. sure, you don't need MILLIONS of players to have a successful game. sure, there's a lot of amazing and great success stories coming from web3 so far. but I just can't help but see what's going on with the web2 scale of gaming and be EXTREMELY concerned for people building games in web3 right now
forget the onboarding side of things, forget the potential price barriers (which are real, don't deny it) - the entertainment value is one that i just...don’t find to be there? i've played a lot of amazing and fun web3 games but I find myself not interested in revisiting them or going back to play them (there are exceptions to this)
most of these web3 games are also exclusively playable on PC, which is great for adoption but usually requires spending a decent amount of money for a decent set up. mobile gaming really has a chance to capture audiences from people in the most accessible way possible but i still keep coming back to my main concerns.
if Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are all struggling to justify their prices and sales to customers for VERY well established IP and long running games to fans - how do we expect the same from web3 gaming
WHICH BRINGS ME TO MY FINAL POINT (i promise i'm wrapping this up)
where are the web3 indie games?????
tons of companies an developers are trying to create the next AAA title but where are the cheap, accessible games for people to download and chat to their friends about? the casual pick em ups or the simple single player story plot lines (not sure how to incorporate web3 into that but still)
entertainment is getting expensive (don’t get me started on movie tickets right now) but it is an ESSENTIAL part of human life imo. i think that people are always looking for something new and exciting and many more people are interested in gaming than meets the eye. this is where I think indie games will take the reigns from TOP industries in time simply due to the cost of everything becoming so high
matter of a fact? i think its already begun and is just going to get stronger in time
so keeping all that in mind, when do we see that come to web3? who is creating those simple indie games that are easy and fun for anyone to access in and out of the space? who knows if we ever see it, time will tell
anyway, here's 4 semi-related images to help boost this post to the algo. hope you enjoyed the rant anon
