@ThatchEffendi @FrankYan2 this isnt totally accurate. When he defected to Italy he cited as his main reason was state censorship which made his artistic ambitions very difficult. He specifically said he didn't have political disagreements with Soviet leadership.

I don't know what's funnier about using Stalker as an example of Communist Revolutionary cinema: That Tarkovsky was spiritually opposed to everything the Soviet tradition represented, that he defected three years after this was released, that the movie is is famous for predicting Chernobyl and reflecting broader environmental concerns that would undermine Leninism, or that he, together with his wife and the lead writer and the movie, died of cancer possibly related to contamination they experienced during filmmaking.
