@blickspicks_ @sapphyreblayze the tendency to project our own, contemporary culture onto the adaptation of historical works is growing quite frequent and it’s honestly sad as we stop asking the question of “what did this story mean to the people who created it?” n instead make it about “us.”

@blickspicks_ @sapphyreblayze well the reason for the themes discussed was probably bc nolan reportedly had drawn the movie from emily wilson’s translation (her approach was to foreground themes of power, slavery, hierarchy, etc) …so it’s distinctly contemporary +

the odyssey has been a fun reminder that tumblr has perhaps the heighest concentration of greek mythology nerds on the internet because everyone on there seemingly wants nolan's head on a platter for the changes he made. totally different vibe versus filmtwt.

“nothingburger” and we have canonically jealous kuroo, kenma joining volleyball to hang out with him, kuroo hyping up kenma’s ability when the 3rd years were bullying him +protective kuroo shutting up some losers who are underestimating kenma… people have written essays for less

@seilacaranumsei @bigmonkeong agreedd. I wouldn’t say it’s the least, as it shows inconsistency in the adaptation (eg since lupita being casted as helen assumed there was sub-saharan tribes in the Mediterranean) but it pmo to see people lose the whole point and deviate to an entirely different thing.

@bigmonkeong Worst part is i can understand wanting some greek representation, in actors or the general art direction (those viking boats piss me off). But i hate that this topic became a whistle to shit on black actors being cast when thats the least of this movies issues

@bigmonkeong I wouldn’t have rated it that low, but cultural appropriation does matter. The odyssey isn’t a historical fossil, but a record of values carried by the people in its time. Criticism on casting and its changed themes isn’t irrational. greekcitytimes.com/2026/05/25/a-l…

this long ass paragraph about jo just for his miserable ass to get dumped at the gas station because yw just doesn't think of him that deeply to be with him that's just so sad 🥀#Boohoo
river_green@reinavanth

What does Jo have and what has he done for him to be a better man? Glad you ask 1. Jo's hot (Ian's words not mine) 2. Jo made Ian notice the smallest things in life like a flower shop on his way home from work and the beauty of decorating his room with life 3. With Jo, Ian had the chance to enjoy things he had never done before or in a long time like star gazing, watching a movie, going on a shopping date, visiting the family, having his partner acknowledge their relationship publicly with no shame. 4. Jo didn't ask, but Ian went monogamous for Jo for a while 5. Jo had personality and characteristics outside of being connected to Ian: photography, travelling, a quarterback, a hunter, a great cook, etc. 6. Jo saved both Ian AND TJ's life, they would have been dead if not for him. 7. Ian felt better whenever he saw Jo 8. Jo is not all green, he has his own streak of yellow obsession and possessiveness, which makes him a complex character and even hotter And most importantly, Jo was a bigger man and put Ian's wishes first above his own wants, letting him go when all Jo wanted to do was holding him back. That is the greatest expression of love anyone is capable of. What Jo did with and for Ian without asking anything in return within a short few months was so much more than what TJ did for Ian for 20 years, so impactful that their time became eternal memories for Ian, something that he carried with and trying to replicate with TJ in their new life. Jo is the youngest, yet the most mature and the best man in the #Wetsand universe.

I apologize for this tweet and the fact that my emotions got the best of me. I forgot some people don’t have the ability to process depth and subtexts, resulting in assigning wrong meanings to events or character motives and failure to understand the narrative. anw happy tjyw eg
