i’m editing videos of myself today. my perception : ears are big, eyebrows are messy, maybe don’t publish. usual public reaction: a few likes, a comment, and a DM — nothing about my ears or eyebrows. the mind is a weird place

video was inaccessible. needed film, machines, massive cameras… but now you can record/delete as many times as needed from your pocket!!! there aren’t many excuses to avoid video now for your org. it’s great for helping people who need you the most get the answers they seek.

@jcravens42 you’re right, it’s so easy! i hear a lot of “YouTube captions have mistakes” but seriously it’s so unbelievably easy to fix.

YouTube makes it so darn easy to correct its automatic captions on videos - there's just no excuse to not have videos correctly captions, especially if they are really short. And nonprofits: correcting captions is a GREAT task for an online volunteer!

u r a nonprofit team of 2. you struggle with socials. you tried clever campaigns, animations etc. instead, try sharing expertise daily. no need to be a “marketer”, be you. be the expert of your service. eg, “tips for single parents”, “how to apply for old age pension”. be you.

small nonprofits, i know that feeling: “if we had a good video”, “a video would tell our story”, “video would help our campaign” — big expectations and a complicated medium. instead just make some selfie videos about different things. feel it out. find a voice. take things easy

many of you are very persuasive in donor meetings, or program info sessions, open houses, or sponsor pitches etc in person. you could do that on video too. it’s like cloning yourself. you’d do all that human persuasion work at scale, online, and in your sleep.

nonprofits: i think selfie videos in your marketing gives a feeling of direct communication. like you were in a moment and shared it with me, here, now. i can almost feel there with you. it's important to think about how interpersonal intentions are conveyed by the type of media.

if you post a selfie video with no context, then it’ll get no views. no one clicks on those for fun. but if your title says “are you eligible for free childcare?” or “fix your student debt”, people will click. which people? the ones who need that info. your people / audience.

when you're a small nonprofit with 1 comms person it's hard to come up with topics. to find out what your audience wants, try this: your inbox—if they write to you questions and complaints, then it's important to them. others will also want to know about those topics. now write!

daily video snippets of your work will help hesitant people become familiar with you and eventually join. if no one likes or follows, who cares. you build storytelling skills and the human side of your brand. the videos help someone. you are who you serve - a human. #nonprofit

add smartphone videos of your nonprofit programs, events, staff, locations... do it a lot, on all channels. then repeat. it helps people make decisions to join you. it really is that simple now. you have a studio in your pocket. #charity

a new immigrant searches "job immigrant winnipeg". a video appears: “job help for immigrants in Winnipeg”. the video has a person clearly explain the service — warm with next steps. it showed up where he needed. read more about viewer context hilborn-charityenews.ca/articles/video…

avoid taking nonprofit video examples seriously. - you don’t know the audience or budget - unknown funnels, ads, tracking, retargeting, etc - you don’t know internal goals, pivots, and failures you only need to know (1) your needs & (2) what your audience needs. go from there
