Nigeria is weighing a range of unilateral actions against South Africa following ongoing attacks on its citizens, describing the options as “reciprocal diplomatic, economic, and regulatory measures.”
Officials say steps under consideration include recalling envoys, downgrading engagements, and applying pressure through “targeted restrictions or license reviews” on major South African companies operating in Nigeria, including telecom and pay-TV firms.
Authorities are also exploring “import restrictions or tariffs,” “investment curbs,” and tighter visa controls as part of a broader response strategy.

Bilateral trade stands at about $2.16 billion, with South Africa exporting roughly $468 million to Nigeria while importing about $1.69 billion, leaving Pretoria with an estimated $1.22 billion deficit.
Government sources acknowledge these are not formal international sanctions but “countermeasures” aimed at signaling displeasure and forcing accountability.
