Conventionally, our police structure has opposed this in principle, until the emergence of the current IGP (@TunjiDisu1). His immediate actions reflect his commitment, understanding of the commander’s intent, and readiness to own and implement it. This is not to suggest that necessary procedural steps, from framework development and legislative backing to gradual implementation and domestication through in-depth stakeholder consultation, will be skipped. As stated earlier, this is not solely a police affair but a delicate policy requiring caution and pragmatism. It is not merely about uniformed personnel carrying arms at state level in competition with federal police. It involves establishing a new criminal justice architecture at state level, including investment in more courts, hiring of judges, engagement of prosecutors, construction of prisons and correctional facilities, and creation of an efficient, digital custody management system for arrests, processing, and offender profiling across states, with data shared centrally for national security harmonisation. Viewed from this perspective, it becomes clear how much care must be taken during implementation to avoid worsening our present situation and multiplying national challenges at state level. How states will manage funding, training, welfare, equipment, and facilities will form part of the ongoing discussion. So it is not as simplistic. 🚔
