Scientists have successfully teleported the quantum state of a photon over 270 meters in a major breakthrough for quantum communication. In an experiment conducted between two buildings at Sapienza University of Rome, researchers achieved quantum teleportation across a 270-meter free-space optical link. This marks the first successful transfer of quantum information between two independent quantum dots (dissimilar light sources), rather than from a single emitter. Using GPS-assisted synchronization and ultra-fast single-photon detectors, the team maintained a high teleportation fidelity of 82%, overcoming atmospheric turbulence and environmental noise. This achievement represents a critical step toward building a scalable quantum internet.
