The Thoddoo agrochemical report 'From dying soils to hidden residues, Maldives faces a food‑safety crisis in slow motion' is a wake-up call. Banned pesticides Carbaryl & Diafenthiuron have been found in food produce. Residues far exceed safe limits: • Dimethoate: 0.52 (limit 0.01) • Permethrin: 0.95 (limit 0.05) • Carbendazim: 0.61 (limit 0.2) This is a serious public health risk requiring immediate intervention. I urge @presidencymv @MFAORmv @Shiyamaldives @MoHmv to enforce regulations, protect consumers, and halt the use of hazardous chemical pesticides without delay. We must also correct a dangerous misconception: the Maldives can grow food without toxic chemicals. From 2006–2013, Island Organics successfully produced food organically on Maarikilu, training farmers across Baa Atoll (Kihaadhoo, Dharavandhoo, Kamadhoo, Kudarikilu, Maalhos) and across Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Fuvahmulah, and Addu to transition away from chemical pesticides and increase food security. This is not theoretical—it is proven. In November 2013, this project was disrupted when, through a flawed bidding process to establish an integrated agricultural farm without chemical pesticides on Maarikilu was awarded to WIZ Company, President Waheed’s wife Ilham’s & her siblings'construction company with no prior agricultural experience; despite a functioning integrated organic farm established by Island Organics already in operation for 7 years!
